He's seems pumped about this team. He really is the best owner we could have ever dreamed for. He has single-handedly saved NBA Basketball for New Orleans (with help from Stern).
Also, did not realize he is 86 years old. Here's to hoping he's got another 5 years in him!
quote:
"I am very excited to get started," Benson said. "I know our staff, our coaches and our team are as well. We have had a very productive offseason and successful start to the preseason.
"The excitement is real with our players and coaches ... the new practice facility and the new improvements to the arena are just a couple of off-the-court improvements we have made that certainly I believe the team is excited about. I believe our fans are also excited about the new talent we have acquired this offseason in addition to the new name, colors and logo.
"(Coach) Monty (Williams), Dell and Mickey have built a nice roster for this season. We have a young, talented team and I am looking forward to watching them grow together this season."
quote:
"Like I said, I think this offseason has been one of change and that is change towards the positive," Benson said. "... I am excited about the continued development of our returning young players like Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers and a healthy Eric Gordon and Jason Smith. Of course, I am also excited to see the chemistry and growth with our new players like Tyreke Evans, Jrue Holiday and Anthony Morrow, to name a few ...

I feel like this was pretty much implied given the team's offseason moves.

I wonder how many rewrites Greg Bensel had to do.

I hated him until he took ownership of the Hornets/Pelicans.
The Hurricane Katrina season fiasco was hard to forget about.
as far as him being the best possible owner for the Pelicans... ehhh, I don't know.
I really like that he brought in Loomis to work salary cap magic, but Gary Chouest was my first choice.
He's a basketball guy. His kids are all basketball people. Its a basketball family with tons of money. Gotta love that.

It is just assumed that Rita will take over both franchises after he passes away?

It's not like Benson was a football guy when he bought the Saints. He's a businessman. And he wants his model to succeed. IMO that better than having a basketball guy.

This is wrong. Benson DGAF right now and is spending money. What more could you want out of him? Chouest was more likely to penny pinch and there was always the small possibility of relocating with him.

Yeah its one of the benefits of having such an old owner. He wants us to win a title while he's still with us.

I was mad about Benson after Katrina for that situation, but when it comes down to it, the guy is a business owner looking to do what's best for his business. He's good in my book these days.

I love greedy old men running my hometown team

I feel your pain because most franchise owners are young and avoid making money if possible.

I agree about Benson spending money like its nobody's business... his days are numbered and he's spending his money... which is awesome for us.
but Chouest isn't going anywhere. He's a DTB guy, born and raised. His company is a DTB company.
Its not like he can relocate his billion dollar offshore company to Seattle or Kansas City.

Schwest is an idiot and he's probably already kicking himself for being such a pussy. he had an opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream - NBA teams are already up to 500 600 million a pop and he wussed out and nearly cost us our franchise.
Thank god for Benson and Stern.

No. After i knock her up i will be running the show.

Most indications of heard/read are that Rita is spoiled and inept and will, at best, be a figurehead. Re: Tom. He is and forever will be a jerk for his actions after Katrina. Maybe some of the younger posters here don't remember but he had one foot out of the door and if it weren't for Paul Tagliabue they'd be the San Antonio Saints. I'm glad he bought the Hornets but that still doesn't change his past behavior.
Re: Chouest. He had numerous chances to buy the team and despite being 'passionate' for basketball kept balking at every opportunity. Maybe he didn't have the finances.
