Obamacare Exchanges: "The Doctor Can't See You Now"

Insurers limiting doctors, hospitals in health insurance market
by Chad Terhune

The doctor can't see you now.

Consumers may hear that a lot more often after getting health insurance under President Obama's Affordable Care Act.

To hold down premiums, major insurers in California have sharply limited the number of doctors and hospitals available to patients in the state's new health insurance market opening Oct. 1.

New data reveal the extent of those cuts in California, a crucial test bed for the federal healthcare law.

These diminished medical networks are fueling growing concerns that many patients will still struggle to get care despite the nation's biggest healthcare expansion in half a century.

Consumers will see long wait times, a scarcity of specialists and loss of a longtime doctor.

......

Newly released data show the pricing power of these tighter networks. In Los Angeles County, Health Net is consistently the lowest-cost option for a mid-level Silver plan across various age groups.

A family of four in Norwalk earning $65,000 annually would pay $384 a month for a Health Net policy, after taking into account a federal subsidy based on their income. For a policy with identical benefits, Blue Shield was next at $477 a month and Kaiser was the most expensive at $602.

The cheapest Silver plan for a couple in their mid-50s earning nearly $100,000 a year was also Health Net at $781 a month. An Anthem policy costs $897. Consumers can check prices at http://www.coveredca.com.

"Health Net will get a lot of business with those rates," said Glen Futterman, a health insurance broker in Woodland Hills. "But no one mentions you might not be able to see your doctor."

Survey: Doctors May Not Participate in Obamacare Exchange Plans
By Chris Jacobs
October 10, 2013

A recent survey covering more than 1,000 physician practices confirms what many experts had feared—many doctors will not participate in Obamacare’s exchanges.

The survey was conducted by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), a trade group representing multi-physician medical practices. The results are in, and they’re unambiguous:

* A majority (55.5 percent) of practices believe the exchanges will have an unfavorable, or very unfavorable, impact on their practice.
* Fewer than three in 10 practices (29.2 percent) definitely plan to “participate with any new health insurance product(s) sold” on an exchange, with a majority (56.4 percent) still uncertain.
* Of those not participating in the exchanges, the top concern, listed by 64 percent of practices, was “concerns about the administrative and regulatory burdens related to these products.”
* More than two in three practices said that reimbursement rates for exchange plans are somewhat lower (36.2 percent) or much lower (33.2 percent) than “average payment rates from all commercial payers in your area”—and these lower reimbursement rates likely explain the lack of robust commitment by physician practices in participating in exchange plans.

The study’s results are even more surprising given the source of the study. MGMA represents many integrated physician practices, including famous practices like the Mayo Clinic. The Obama Administration has held out these types of integrated practices as the prototype for the accountable care organization (ACO) model created in Obamacare. Yet these practices, which the Administration views as part of the future of health care, along with many other doctors and hospitals, may decide not to participate in Obamacare exchange plans.

Forward.... Look for an executive order coming very soon that says "To practice medicine, you HAVE to accept ACA Exchange insurance"

Appears the Exchange Rates which are very high, only buy the consumer de facto Medicaid Coverage.

Winning!

It is absolutely astonishing to me that people really do support this crap.

Did they not see this coming? Did they think that doctors would welcome even more needless bureaucracy and red tape into their lives on top of a massive influx of new patients? Because it was never going to happen.

They were either stupid or evil

I wish every single one on here would tell us which they are.

If you actually thought this was going to work and be deficit neutral, you are a frickING MORON

If you acted like you thought this would work, knowing it would fail and lead to single payer, you are evil and should have the living shite beat out of you.

Well, the majority of Americans come from our Progressive public school system, so...

Serious question, which sort of defends our stupid populace:

Did a fine Progressive media outlet like the LA Times think to write a report like this when those racist republicans were pointing this out?

Nope. They wouldn't dare. They just cried racism and shut out the opposition.

Wouldn't it be worse coverage than Medicaid? If they can't afford a higher premium on the exchange, how can they afford the deductible they have to pay before coverage kicks in? Medicaid, they'd pay zero premium, zero deductible, right?

Not really an issue because Obama will eventually force them to take these patients...

It's all baby steps. This is how I see it playing out:

1. News gets out that doctors are not accepting patients with the exchange insurance.
2. Obama flies in with he rhetoric to save the day and says this can't happen in America.
3. Calls for a bill that forces all doctors that accept insurance to have to take Obamacare insurance policies.
4. Republicans cave after being called racist and elitist by the Liberals.
5. Doctors are mandated to accept these policies are will get fined.

I read that, In Canada, due to the failures of their socialized medicine, that fee for service clinics were popping up all over.

Question:

What is the difference between a regular plan (thro employer, individual, etc) and the exchanges plans that would make doctors not accept the exchange plans? and how can you decipher which plans are from exchanges and not?

Completely agree. Why are you folks trying to tear this law down, instead of working together to ensure that it works? Trying to scare people into not signing up for it. You should be ashamed. You should work to make it work... OH.. and MONKEY COURT.

eh.. i can't keep this up. Yes, I watched a bit of MSNBC last night, and to a host, that's what every single one of them kept parroting.

Sounds like "insured in name only".

Speaking of which, DA says we're too ignorant and superstitious to realize that a high premium, high deductible plan with no network is good for us but a catastrophic plan is insurance in name only.
