Any of you guys kid shoot one? My boy has been shooting a Rossi .223 but he has about out grown it, went in the pawn shop an they have this gun for sale at a pretty decent price. If somebody will post a pic for me ill email of my sons first buck kill last year, will make you jealous.

i like the 7-08 caliber, and have heard the H-R is decent. I don't know how old he is, but a nice cheap youth bolt action would probably keep up with him better through the years.

I have one. Cut the stock off and had the barrel ported, kids shoot it well.

If it's the same one I have, the local places I checked didn't have a lathe that would fit that small of the barrel for porting. Had to send it off to magnaport to get it ported. It's loud as a mothafricka now, but after the port and adding 3/4 lb lead to the stock you can shoot it one handed. 140 grain bullet beats the hell out of a 90 grain .243 bullet for kids.

just treat a bolt as a single shot, i think i only paid about 300 for the gun with a scope

Yep thats a Yazoo County Ms Big Black River buck. His mommas folks own 1000 acres on the river. Got to keep her happy i guess! I saw this buck slipping across the road right at dark into a cut over, next morning I walked in a spotted for about an hour before I found him bedded in a Oak Top, slipped in after lunch down wind, set up in a downed oak top about 50 yards from him, he stood up an hour later.

I like the 7-08 as a youth round with reduced or managed recoil loads. My son shoots one. No probs.

Consider if its a short term invertment or something he's gonna have a while and shoot often. There are much better rifles than HR, but if he will be shooting it twice a year for two years before an upgrade, it won't hurt IMO.

He will hunt or you can with that 7-08 for a long time, I still hunt mine regularly, I would stay away from a single shot/breach style - get him a regular 7-08, and load one round.

Yet he's ready to be able to pull the hammer back by himself and risk letting it slip? Get the boy a semi-decent bolt and he'll still grab that thing years from now for old times sake. If my 8yr. old daughter can handle a 7mm-08 I'm positive your Lil Man can. Heckuva 1st deer btw. I've been outdone by a kid.....

Great advice, how much easier on the shoulder are the recoil management rounds?

My 7 year old has one . He's been shooting it since he was 6 . I will recommend the less recoil shells cause it will kick the shite outta him with normal 7 mmO8 shells

A reduced recoil 7-08 recoils less than a full power 243 Win w/ a 100 grain bullet.

7-08 is a FINE choice for hunters of ALL ages, but especially for a youth gun. Just be sure the stock fits him well. Use a nice recoil pad.
