Healthcare.gov is twice as big as Facebook...

... and Windows, and OSX.... combined.

but but but... its just heavy traffic

The latest controversy revolves around The New York Times' reporting that roughly 1 percent of Healthcare.gov -- or 5 million lines of code -- would need to be rewritten, putting the Web site's total size at a mind-boggling 500 million lines of code -- a scale that suggests months upon months of work.

Yep, 500 million lines of code. A f-22 Raptor only has around 150 million.

500 million lines of code!?

That's just asking for this shitshow.

The dem spin will be something like "HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebellius was able to implement twice as much code as Facebook, OSX and Windows combined for Healthcare.gov for only $600 million. All this code makes the ACA more efficient for the consumer while giving the millions and millions healthcare that they didn't have before."

It's like people with NO programing experience whatsoever wrote the damn code.

Jesus.

500 million lines of code? New programmers often write poorly, using far to many lines to do simple tasks because of a failed understanding of how to properly parse multiple commands and use subroutines.

Coincidentally, smaller code has less "glitches" and is easier to compile and fix. This is a damn nightmare.

Complete amateur hour.

BTW, this same company who wrote this code, wrote the failed code for the Canadian Gun Registry.

I heard/read about the total number of lines of coding used in the system but with no comparison to other things at all. Why did the law call for the hiring of more IRS peeps when what was lacking was programmers in fact. Might it be if the Canuck company had been paid a few more hundreds of million dollars the product would have been viable at birth?

I don't know much about software coding, but the fact that Facebook entertains over a BILLION people, yet Healthcare.gov has over 5x's the amount of code tells me that something is seriously wrong.

Bringing in all of these new outside resources is only going to slow this down too. There is a well known software management law known as Brook's law that identified this from work done at IBM.

[quote]Brooks's law: Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later. A man-month is a concept of a unit of work proportional to the number of people working multiplied by the time that they work; Brooks's law says that this relation is a myth, and is hence the centerpiece of the book.

Complex programming projects cannot be perfectly partitioned into discrete tasks that can be worked on without communication between the workers and without establishing a set of complex interrelationships between tasks and the workers performing them.

Therefore, assigning more programmers to a project running behind schedule will make it even later. This is because the time required for the new programmers to learn about the project and the increased communication overhead will consume an ever increasing quantity of the calendar time available. When n people have to communicate among themselves, as n increases, their output decreases and when it becomes negative the project is delayed further with every person added.

•Group intercommunication formula: n(n - 1) / 2
•Example: 50 developers give 50 · (50 – 1) / 2 = 1225 channels of communication.

They're going to have to do a complete overhaul. No way it will be ready by the mandate deadline.

And you wonder why they didn't want this monumental piece of shite to be enacted until after the 2012 election.

So, that means we ONLY paid a little over $1 per line of code???

What a bargain!!!

5 million bad lines of code?

Anybody they bring in to fix it will quickly decide it is easier and cheaper to just redo the thing from scratch.

This thing is an epic pile of shite before it's even begun. God help us all once this ship leaves the dock with millions aboard.

Also known as the Baby Rule.

It says that if one woman can make a baby in nine months, then nine women should be able to do it in a month.

That kind of speaks that you are about my age and the "educators" had discovered a thing called new math to use in the classrooms of America. The product was a big CF in fact and just confused the hell out off students.
