Ive read a few posters suggest that some of the defensive lineman we brought in in last years class must have been overrated or misevaluated by the recruiting svcs and our coaches bc they havent seen playing time this season. My question is isnt it pretty hard for a true freshman to make an impact on the defensive line in the SEC? I seem to remember studs like mingo, tyson jackson, and montgomery having to redshirt a season at lsu.

Yes, next year will be telling though. With the potential losses of Freak and Ego we are gonna need some guys to step up.

You have to play before you can determine if they are overated.

Glenn Dorsey played limited snaps as a freshman.

Freak and ego need to stay and develop their craft. They are not nfl ready right now and would be low round draft picks. If they come back and perform next year they can be 3rd round or better picks and make more money.

Herron had some type of leg or knee procedure before he came in, so he was out before he had a chance. Bain has tools but is raw, so it was expected he would sit this year. Gilmore was a toss up as far as PT this year, but not being here in the spring definately decreases the chance to adjust to college level and play. Bower and lacautore have played some which is valuable. Them gaining experience along with incoming talent like godcheaux and hopefully Willis, and the future should be bright.

+1

They are pretty good but have done nothing, that I can see, to warrant going early.

But to answer op question. A freshman dline man is not best case scenario in my mind no matter his recruiting rank. I think they need a redshirt year to get in the weight room and work on their body and strength, while gaining knowledge.

I look at it like a freshman highly recruited dline man has probably his whole football career been bigger and stronger then most of the kids he has played against. Suddenly they get to college and everybody is just as fast and just as big and it takes time for them to get their body right and their use of leverage right. I think ideally most guys on dline or oline for that matter should be redshirted unless they are a one of a kind talent.

Neither are ready to enter the NFL draft from what I've witnessed this year.

They are not going anywhere. They need another year. With the NFL draft being salary capped now, college players are learning that they should stay another year if they think they can move from 4th up to 2nd or 3rd up to 1st round. In other words if you aren't getting drafted by the end of the 2nd, you should think hard about staying. I think these players have taken note of last years class leaving early. Many should have stayed one more year and improved their stock and game.

Just making it to the NFL shouldn't be the goal. It should be succeeding in the NFL.

This. If you're not a force consistently in college with one of the DL coaches in the country in college, then you won't be drafted early and you may not even make a roster on the next level. Not NFL ready.

Setting aside the Dline for a moment, I have noticed that T White has been beaten in coverage consistently, and sometimes quite badly, since entering the starting lineup. I hope he remains confident and benefits from this early exposure.

Or be free agents like a lot of players who left early and should have stayed.

I disagree. I think he has played tighter man than any other corner on the team thus far. I take note of him and he plays tight to the wide receiver. He had great coverage in the ole miss game, that pass was behind the wide receiver though. If that pass is placed right Tre gets a pick or a bat down.

He also has outstanding football IQ for a freshman. He jumps those wide receiver screens like crazy. He also tackles well. He might be the best tackler we have behind Kwon Alexander. That is pitiful too....

Tre White is just a true freshman. He will be a building block for at least the next two years.
