Sunday afternoon 7ish the 6y/o dropped the hammer on a nice 9pt with the .243. First deer he ever shot at. It hit the ground back legs kicking and laid there. High fives and hugs in stand. Getting dark so we wait on my dad to get there to walk up together. Get to the spot and there is no deer. No blood, no nothing. Look around in the general area that night. We pull out. Searched about 4 hours yesterday in the accompanying bottom.
Crazy thing is it happened right in front of someones game camera, have pics of it standing there, hitting the ground, then lying there kicking then gone...

He's a little upset. I feel horrible for not shooting it again when it was down, "as dumb as that sounds".
Going to try and look around again today, hopefully some buzzards clue me off.

Damnit. That's got to be a disgusting feeling. Same thing happened the first time I shot a deer, but at least it was a doe and not a nice buck. I was so sick that I threw up at school the next day.

southernbloodtracker.com and get the numbers of some people in your area with dogs incase it ever happens again. You might have to wait another day for buzzards. All you can do is try.

Not much of a consolidation, but it'll make it that much better when he does get one. It's hard to understand that it isn't the only chance you'll ever get at that age.

The worst part is that I have the video of him jumping up and down in the blind after he hit it, he was so pumped.
He's been about 2'' outside the circle at 100 yards and this was a 66 yard shot. but i don't think that bullet came out.

If it makes him feel any better, I killed my first deer at 7 years old, and I was 18 before I saw a deer anywhere near that size.

ETA: Actually now that I look at it, I've still never seen one that size. It could always be worse

Then you'll have a dead kid and a dead deer on your hands.

Those things HURT. I wouldn't blame the gun unless you find out where he hit it.

Did something similar last year on a doe

I believe that I hit her spine, she fell to the grown and flopped like you mentioned, then all of a sudden after a little while she got up and walked away. NO BLOOD! this was with a 45 cal black powder

I've heard of it happening to a few people.

If its got any signs of life left, I have my sights on it.

I've put 2 bullets through a whole lot of deer.
