The NFL has announced that Ted Cottrell has reduced the two-game suspension imposed earlier this week on Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather to one game.

Meriweather will lose one of 17 game checks. At a base salary of $1.2 million for 2013, that’s lost earnings of $70,588.

quote:

Brandon Meriweather has a well-earned reputation as a head-hunter in the Washington Redskins' secondary. His unwillingness (or inability) to change his playing style has taken him off the field.

Meriweather was flagged twice for illegal hits in Sunday's 45-41 win over the Bears. After the game, Chicago receiver Brandon Marshall -- the recipient of one of those hits -- railed against Meriweather's playing style, saying the safety should be suspended or kicked out of the game entirely.

"Guys like that really don't understand that there is life after football," Marshall said, via the Chicago Tribune.

NFL fined Meriweather $42,000 last month for a helmet-to-helmet hit.

When Brandon Marshall is calling for you to be kicked out for life, you're doing something wrong. Meriweather is Chuck Cecil 2.0. The other thread was anchored, I think for thread title.

Came into this thread expecting to defend good solid football, but watching those two .gifs it's not even possible to defend that. He's headhunting and he should be banned for longer than 2 games.

His hit on Todd Heap in 2010 was one of the most blatant headshots I have ever seen. It sad to see that his style of play hasn't changed.

This guy really plays with wreckless abandon. I truly think he doesn't give a shite if he knocks himself out on alot of these hits.

He fricking WISHES!!! When Cecil was on the Phoenix Cardinals it was fricking awesome! He was only here for a year, but it was his most "headhuntingist" year!

Absolutely picture perfect hit

Sure it isn't perfect but what is Meriweather supposed to do? There is a guy on the WR's back pushing the him down.

What about the fact that the WR dropped the ball before the hit happened.

in no way, shape, or form, is a hit perfect if the defender lowers his head like that

merriweather actually used the crown of his helmet...TWICE. the 2nd he also launched and was 100% airborn at impact

he's going to paralyze himself one day

i'm a huge "frick these rules' guy, but these hits have been illegal for decades

The rules will continue to be broken every single week because its impossible to play football and make a non-launching, below the shoulders, non targeting, non spearing hit every time. These hits are simply a part of football.

Football isn't played with your head straight up or with your feet on the ground. None of these rules will change that.
