If Saban is such a great coach, why did the 2004 team get drummed by Georgia, and lose on the last play to Iowa in Capital One Bowl. Weren't we the defending champs ? We should have fired that guy, right ?

We would have forgotten about 2004 when he went on to win the BCS MNC in 2006.

You should've seen the threads on here during the struggle with Troy in 2004.

"Is this team poorly coached?"

He was a good coach at that point and still had to learn how to deal with layers after the NC year affect. I think he learned from that don't you??

Saban 2004

There should be a provision written into the by-laws of this site that prohibits posters from ranting about 2004. It is the single most mis-cited season on this board. It drives me insane.

To recap, 2004 LSU finished 9-2 (6-2) in the regular season, 9-3 overall. That 6-2 regular SEC record matches or exceeds Miles' SEC mark in all but two of his nine seasons. For example, if 2004 was a disaster, then so was last year.

God damn.

Make no mistake about it, many LSU "fans" were screaming for just that.
Many will deny it, but it is %100 true. This board, the postgame show and the me stands were full of negativity.

I posted in another thread about this very thing.
I actually started to strongly dislike much of the LSU fanbase around this time. It changed. Maybe it was always ignorant , but it really started to shine through in the early part of this century.
I haven't missed a home game in 21 seasons and I haven't used the word "we" when referring to LSU fans in about a decade or so.

I hate these threads.

It's ok we lost to Ole Miss because Saban lost 3 games almost 10 years ago.

It's time for people to accept the fact that Saban may end up the greatest coach in the history of college football...it's good fortune he passed through LSU on the way.

Only beat 1 ranked team who ended season unranked and got our arse destroyed by UGA whereas last year we beat 3 ranked teams 2 of which ended up top 10.

To compare the two is asinine.

If you want some real fun though look at the 2002 team.

What logic? That's my point. 9-2 (6-2) isn't some disastous embarrassment, it's the same regular SEC record Miles has had in seven of his nine seasons (assuming we don't lose again this season). People who want to cite 2004 as some evidence of Saban's coaching weakness are complete dolts who clearly have a transparent agenda.

I find it parrticularly amusing that you are chastising Saban for going 9-2 (6-2) in the year following an NC given how LSU performed in 2008 following the NC.

Just the same illogical crap recycled time and time again.

Don't be stupid.

We had a green Jamoron Russell and Marcus Randal, who had the heart of a Tiger and athleticism but was not a great QB.

It was a solid year but definitely we were rebuilding.

yes i do. but to assume he would have won all those championships here, is very presumtious. he's a great coach , no doubt, but we have a great coach here. his biggest fault isnt clock management, or being goofy, or in game coaching. it's simply HE'S NOT NICK SABAN, period !

slow down brother...

youre missing my whole point. Im not chastising saban. I agree completely with you. what im saying is that by the logic we apply to judge Miles, when applied to Saban is ridiculous. In 2004, who knew he would become what he is now. Coaches, teams, have bad games, and sometimes bad years. Its just as ridiculous to judge Miles for a loss here and there as it was to judge Saban for 2002 or 2004.

Saban now is a completely different animal from 2004.

He took his experiences here, his NFL experience, and went to Bama and created a factory-machine.

He has mastered being a college football head coach.
