Someone help me out here.

Normally I love this kind of stuff. PTA is one of my favorite filmmakers of all time. I count "Magnolia" as one of my all-time favorite films. I love pretentious crap like this.

But I just finished "The Master" and I did not like it at all.

I don't know if I just didn't get it on some level or if it's just a piece of crap. So I would appreciate any help.

*This is not a complaint about the filmmaking or acting, which were both top-notch, but rather about the story.

I am the same way. Really hated that movie and thought the story was absolute shite. The acting was incredible though.

Strangely enough, I thought Punch Drunk was more pretentious than Magnolia.

I've yet to see The Master.

I strongly suggest you watch it again. I liked it a lot more the second time (and every time thereafter) I watched it. I find it to be a great movie, and I can't really explain why.

I didn't find anything that happened after Philadelphia very satisfying, but I liked the plot up to that point. Only watched it once though.

Some of the best acting you'll ever see mixed into a crappy story.

It's better on multiple viewings. I think it's his best film behind There Will be Blood.

I watched it and thought it was strange. But so was Ron L Hubbard. The dancing naked scene was like an acid trip.

I took it as a referendum on the people who follow that nonsense. Usually those out of touch with reality (rich) or trying to find something- usually misfit, low IQ.

Always a market for those offering up a purpose to people looking for purpose.

The story isn't important. Its more about the relationship between the two main characters. There's some sort of anti-religious message in there too. Between this movie and TWBB, I think PTA has some issues with organized religion.

Joaquin Phoenix should have won the Academy Award for it.

however the DDL hype took over.

This is what I actually liked about it

About mid-way through, I got the feeling that every single person in it is bat-crap crazy in one way or another.

Then, I started to think, or reaffirm the notion that really

everybody is nuts in one way or another.

For that, I give it 3 thumbs up.

This, which makes it a bad movie. It's fine as a character study or as a study in how to act off another character, but the movie was not good, no matter how spectacular the performances. A body without a skeleton is just a mess of skin and tissue lying on the floor. Without the skeleton, it cannot get up and walk around or dance. This movie had all the skin and tissue in the world, but nothing to hold it up. As such, it was a bad movie.

Add that to the facts that there are some really poor edits, imo, and the movie does not come to any sort of resolution worth a damn, and it stays flat throughout.

You're not alone in disliking this movie, Wiki. It came across as pretentious drivel despite the wonderful turns by Phoenix and Hoffman.

that whole post was fantastic, and couldnt agree more.

i think he got a little caught up in the sparse narrative concept of TWBB, and pushed it a little too far.

glad I'm not the only one.

another thing I'd like to say regarding Brosef Stalin's argument that "The story isn't important. Its more about the relationship between the two main characters."

even if that's true, I'd argue that the relationship between Quell and Dodd wasn't even that interesting, so the film failed on that level as well. and that's even if you consider any homosexual undertones, or any duality of man type scenarios where Quell and Dodd are symbols of man in 2 conflicting states.

it just wasn't that interesting.

I think it was more about how religion is useless. There was no resolution at the end, Freddie never changed as a character. All the indoctrination attempts failed. It seemed to have an anti religious message to me.

I think this is intentional. It was PTA's way of putting you in Freddie's mind. By the end of the movie, Freddie and the audience are all wondering what the point of any of that was.

This is what makes it a terrible film. Story should always be important regardless of the acting, theme, message, etc. Story is what drives the plot and the movie.

Love every other PTA movie and hated The Master. The trailer was better than the movie.

It was missing something. Plenty of great actors and an interesting story at the core without that core being developed correctly.
