Going in now. Somewhere north of my 10th time seeing it, shy of 15.

I didn´t think it of interest. The movie itself is long, and that just makes it longer, as what was added was superfluous.

Watch the original release.
I'm a big enough fan to watch Redux, but the scenes that were cut don't really take away from the story.
Keep in mind that it's at least partially an adaptation of Heart of Darkness, so don't watch it in the strict context of being a Vietnam War movie.

One of my all time favorite movies. I honestly can not understand how someone is able to dislike this film.

You have to be of a certain age to really understand and enjoy this movie.
I thought it was just "ok" when I watched it in my teens/20s. I started to like it in my 30s. Late 30s, I really enjoyed it. Now, in my 40s, I think it's as amazing as everyone says, but maybe for different reasons.
When you watch it as a youngster, you view it as if you were one of the soldiers on the boat under Sheen's command. Then, as you get older, you start watching from Sheen's point of view. Then Sheen's supervisors. Then, finally, you can see Kurtz's point of view. I will not comment on whether or not I have made to that point yet.

Not only do I enjoy the movie more as I get older, I prefer the Redux version. Although it is weighed down by a little too much material, I like the context of the added scenes.
The movie is a work of art and should be appreciated as such - even if it is not everyone's cup of tea.

Agreed, it's a great movie. I even watch the director's cut. The bunny phuck scene is too hard to pass up. I love the crazy detours the story takes.

I'd probably be pegged as one of the mythical "haters", but your comments have me thinking may be time to give it another viewing.
Watched it in HS, college, and post grad, and while I appreciated the first half, I could never embrace the final act. And I'm a huge fan of Heart of Darkness. I just never felt that Coppola pulled off the tonal switch so late into the film.
But reading your comments, I may be sold on another viewing. It's been well over a decade at this point since I've seen it, so the time may be right.

That movie makes me have suicidal/homicidal thoughts.

i saw the redux first and it hindered my enjoyment because of the unnecessary scenes. when i saw the theatrical cut, i enjoyed 10x more

Both great.
However, the original cut is greater than the redux.
I do like the scene at the French plantation after Clean's death in the redux version.

Which is why I prefer the Redux - the jarring change in tone was tough to absorb in the theatrical cut. Other fans of the film that I know are split about 50/50, perhaps slightly leaning to the original theatrical cut - it is certainly the tighter and more (relatively) fast-paced version. But, I enjoy the protracted scenes with Kilgore's unit, the second encounter with the Bunnies, the Plantation and the extras at the end. These allow for a more smooth descent from the calm, orderly Saigon, to the utter insanity of Kurtz's operation.
The linear breakdown of good military order and discipline (the ideal) all the way to the brutal reality of war without restraint (reality) is something I had to become a warrior myself to truly appreciate. It is truly an artistic masterpiece, and the Redux is especially so.
