I've just started watching this season, but I figured I'd start from the beginning between episodes. Jessica Lange and a couple of other actors are in the pilot. Obviously they're not the same characters. Why did they do this?

Because it's a different story every season and they like to use the same actors.

Each season is a completely new story with new characters. They've been using some of the same actors. I actually kind of like it

Seems like it would be disorienting between seasons though.

Not really. As long as you realize it's a different story it really isn't a big deal.

Seasons are self-contained for the most part.

I think it's unique and it works because if this show does one thing really good, it's the acting. Lange, Peters, et el, all very good at what they do.

See it as a ghost or horror story with the same cast but different characters. I mean, that's what ghost stories are anyway, right? Either personal experiences or made up ones...

It's not really disorienting, but you will notice that most of the posters on here who have watched since season 1 will refer to the new characters as their original names.

For example, Kyle in this season will never be Kyle to anyone on this board, he will ALWAYS be Tate. I'm still not confused as to the difference in the characters.

Only hotter one I can think of in the series was the red headed maid in the first season.

Aside from what others have said, it keeps casting open ended as well. Lange is retiring after this season. Dylan McDermott, Joseph Finnes, and Zachary Quinto among others have been on and off the show. Some actors have been in every season, some haven't.

is it disorienting when certain actors and directors always work together in movies?

Not even comparable. What made that season great would be when they would show the young maid all sexy and quickly switch over to her old self. It would make me want to throw the remote at the screen.
