Ebay founder gives Glenn Greenwald $250 mil for start up news channel

LINK /

Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay, has revealed more details of the media organization he is creating with journalist Glenn Greenwald.

Greenwald announced on Tuesday that he was leaving the Guardian, where he has broken a series of stories on the National Security Agency, based on documents from whistleblower Edward Snowden.

In an interview with Jay Rosen, media critic and NYU professor of journalism, Omidyar said he was committing an initial $250m to the as-yet-unnamed venture. Omidyar told Rosen the decision was fuelled by his “rising concern about press freedoms in the United States and around the world”.

Omidyar said he hopes the project will promote “independent journalists with expertise, and a voice and a following” while using Silicon Valley knowhow to build an audience. “Companies in Silicon Valley invest a lot in understanding their users and what drives user engagement,” Omidyar said. The company will be online only and all proceeds will be reinvested in journalism.

Finally a champion for truth with more credibility than wikileaks may emerge.

For him to be able to give that much money is amazing. Ebay--who would of thunk it?

I'll be interested to see if they secure their own infrastructure/ability to disseminate their message.

I remember the US Government putting pressure on the ISPs and server farms that did business with Wikileaks.

Hopefully this venture can insulate themselves from that threat.

He ought to buy MSNBC,NBC, CBS, or ABC with that money and make it fair and moderate instead of Democrat only. They would grow into the alternative to watch.

Hopefully they will utilize decentralized/distributed technologies to mitigate this risk.

I would think Greenwald and the Ebay guy are sophisticated enough to do that.

Im curious, though. Does using a decentralized infrastructure increase the risk of the guys at the top losing control of the message?

Like if you own the streamlined infrastructure, your message gets out because there are no other avenues for other messages to get within your streamlined dissemination tool(s).

Is there a possibility of the owners of those computers/servers who make up the decentralized network corrupting and/or hijacking the massage that Greenwald is trying to get out?

There's also like a 30% chance what I just typed is unintelligible garble and in now way an accurate articulation of what I'm trying to convey/ask

It depends on what you mean by "losing control."

If you mean that others could take it and distribute it elsewhere, then yes.

If you mean that others could take it and CHANGE it and then redistribute, well then there are steps you can take to make sure everyone knows what the true, authenticated copy is.

For instance, let's say they publish a document and they put it on a distributed network like BitTorrent. Well, before they put it out there, they could run a hash on the original file and tell everyone what the hash is...then when people download the document, then can run the hash on it as well and compare to the one listed by Greenwald's org. If the document changed even one single bit (and I mean 'bit' in a computer sense, literally one single bit) then the hash will be significantly different.

This tactic is actually in common use all over the internet for ensuring downloads are uncorrupted.

And that's just one example. There are other methods they could use as well, but I think that's the easiest.

Cool, that addressed my concerns.

I'd like to see this organization develop. I wish them the best.

re: Ebay founder gives Glenn Greenwald $250 mil for start up news channel

Good, honest journalism is starting to appear much more. More people are starting to realize what the mainstream media really is: the public relations department for government. There is a HUGE market for honest, truthful reporting and its about time somebody starts to invest to fill that market.

Great journalists and alt media companies such as Abby Martin, Amber Lyons, Wikileaks, Freedom of the Press, Disinformation, Jeremy Scahill, and a slew of others keep gaining more popularity and credibility. However, most of them are relegated to social media and blogs to spread their message. Hopefully this channel gives good journalists a stage for a larger audience.

With the AP wiretapping and the general repression of honest reporting I see a lot of journalists leaving large media corporations for alternative, independent companies. Especially as more young reporters enter the field.

This is almost certainly going to be a progressive news source.

I guarantee it will be more objective and informative than Fox, CNN, MSNBC, or Bloomberg.

From what I have seen, Greenwald has no issues with calling out politicians on both sides of the aisle. He has given Obama no concessions on the NSA stuff or Syria.

So in your opinion it will be heavily biased? That may be the end, but I don't think that's the plan. Reporters should report, not editorialize. Maybe we'll see a bit more reporting.

In typical Glenn Greenwald fashion

Glenn has just as much of an agenda, if not more, than most of the reporters discussed on this board

Edit: I hate to even group him in with reporters. He's a columnist.
