I've been thinking about this a lot since there have been so many threads about our unfairly tough schedule. I agree with many of the opinions. And it would be so easy to make it fair, but that's for another day. Here are just some thoughts on the positives of going through a grinder:

1. Lack of boredom.
Think about it, isn't it a lot more fun to play TCU, Georgia, and Florida than Tennessee, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt? I know I enjoy it more. I'm already bored thinking about next year's schedule, especially that pathetic OOC schedule. (And it may hurt us in the playoff selection process.) In 2011 we were 11-0 with the toughest schedule in the history of planet earth, and without a QB. Other than the BCSCG, in which Bama got an unprecedented (and I believe unfair) second shot at us, that was the most exciting 5 months I've ever had as a Tiger fan.

2. Media exposure
Really, outside of Tuscaloosa, who gives a crap about the Bama games since aTm? Sure the Tide are still good but they hardly get mentioned anymore. Saban gets french kissed occasionally, but who the hell hypes Bama vs. Kentucky?

3. On the edge
I can see both sides of this, but I believe when you have a good team (and that's key) players stay sharp when they face a tough schedule. It's easy to lose focus during a long season of humdrum opponents. Forged in that crucible of fire, you come out hardened steel.

Props for the good points you made. Still don't like the schedule but I accept it.

The big advantage I see is toughness. Watch how we whip Bama on both lines when we play. Happened last year too and they should've lost. Georgia beat us IMO for the same reason.

Then in turn, our defense got better. Bamas weak schedule will bear low hanging fruit yet again this season. We are going to crush them.

They are getting acclimated to teams that lsu would run out of the stadium.

Aside from florida and Georgia we virtually play the same opponets year in and out and the same amount of cupcake opponets. We dont always play Georgia they just play them less. Technically our schedule is only tougher in the years we play georgia and our First OCC opponet is sometimes a lil tougher than theirs. So since they have beaten us the last two times we faced i see no advantages of scheduling tough OCC opponets as our tougher schedule has not prepared us to beat them any more than their soft schedule has set them up to lose.

I know this is your site. I get it. But your schedule is not that much different. You play the 3 and 4 team from the East. Bama plays the 5 and 7. Wow. Va-Tec > TCU, Col st and UAB a wash Ga. St and Furman a wash. The only thing that makes your schedule harder is that you play @ the number 1 team

I have always rathered see the Tigers play a schedule that will be respected at the end of the year. I laugh when I see how weak minded Bama has been in rigging their schedules while LSU has opponents like their 2011 schedule when they went undefeated and had the nest regular season in BCS history.

Strength of schedule will get us into the NC game every year with one less if necc. That along with being battle tested for the beef of our SEC schedule makes setting up tough opponents out of conference more than worth it.

Also, without getting tortched in Athens this year, the Chief would still be trying to get most of the original defensive starters to play better while guys like RR might not be seeing the field much less starting. This will make the Tigers much more likely to beat our biggest rivals at the end of the season than if we would have beaten Geo.

After all, we would all rather lose to Geo from the east than to A+M or Bama. Give me the tougher opponents every year IMO.

The best thing about this year is that we are playing tough teams and not getting hurt much at all. Over the last few years, we have had casualties on the OL and other important positions that has hurt us but this year we are peaking at the perfect time and I like it.

I agree with all the pros you listed. Another advantage I can think of is that while the tough schedule makes us more likely to lose, it also gives more chances to climb back the ranking should we lose early.

Wow is right. Not that much different?!
Wrong again. And by the way, have you played Oregon in an opener yet? Maybe you think Michigan > Oregon.

Fla has not been that good lately. Both teams played them in 2011 and it was basically the same 30 point beat down by both. Sorry about your loss last year but Louisville beat them and Miami this year. Nothing to hang your helmet on.

Well then tell bama to make them a permanent opponent and give us Tennessee

We'll Michigan did win their bcsbg the year prior to opening with Bama and Oregon lost theirs the year prior to LSU.

There is a huge difference between Fl/UGA and Tenn/Kentucky. VT may be a wash but not better than TCU, their sched is a joke. What about Chattanooga?
This is every year.

Like the idea of a tough SOS that looks better and can make a team tougher but a real and serious side effect is getting beat up.
