You call it an "idiotic simplification", I call it some of the MANY other options she had that didn't call for her to jump off a damn tower.

You're right. I'm sure they took no precautions whatsoever. Other than, you know, taking her out of school completely.

re: 2 girls arrested in Florida cyberbullying case

After this I am done.......Breesus, without having kids you prob can't truly get all of this like I do. I have an 8 and 11 year old. I coach both in baseball year round, so I am around kids constantly. Actions like this can destroy a kid. Some have great parents like it appears u hope to be. Others aren't so lucky. My point is there needs to be protection for kids. Not everyone will have a good parent(s). I have no idea what a felony charge will mean for a 14 year old. Maybe the answer is to punish the parents. I don't know. But I do know that there needs to be a consequence to prevent this......btw kids have amendment rights?

re: 2 girls arrested in Florida cyberbullying case

I'm late to the party, but how is this such a debate? It's not like this was two friends having a rift. A large group of these people were telling the girl to kill herself. Should the parents be liable? For anything other than raising shitty kids, not really, but those kids need to be taught that abuse is not limited to physical altercations. Calling someone fat or names is schoolyard shit, but telling someone to kill themselves and continuing to once the person attempts to get away from the situation is psychotic shite.

Cyberbullying is not just about arresting people for hurting someone's feelings. It's for people harassing someone relentlessly. Some of you say that its her choice to use social media. You expect a young girl to cut herself off from the world completely to avoid this shit? Well, looks like she did just that. Judging by everything I've read, the Shaw girl needs to be shown what the real hardasses of the world are all about.

I know to a lot of you internet cool guys, it's stupid to think that kids should be arrested for being "kids". This was clear cut harassment, and that's not anything like simple bullying. Not every kid that kills themselves because they weren't liked were harassed. This girl was harassed if the facts presented are true.

quote:

Even after Rebecca's mom moved her to a new school, the cyberbullying continued on social media and through text messages, authorities said.

That right there is why it escalated the way it did. There were attempts to get away from it, and they followed along and kept it up.

Yep. This point has been made a bunch in this thread too, but it continues to be overlooked. How any one can't see a distinction is beyond my comprehension.

No, but I would expect her to avoid the things that make her feel upset/sad.

re: 2 girls arrested in Florida cyberbullying case

Louisiana has a remedy for this. I would hope people would use it before something like this happens.

§40.7. Cyberbullying

A. Cyberbullying is the transmission of any electronic textual, visual, written, or oral communication with the malicious and willful intent to coerce, abuse, torment, or intimidate a person under the age of eighteen.

B. For purposes of this Section:

(1) "Cable operator" means any person or group of persons who provides cable service over a cable system and directly, or through one or more affiliates, owns a significant interest in such cable system, or who otherwise controls or is responsible for, through any arrangement, the management and operation of such a cable system.

(2) "Electronic textual, visual, written, or oral communication" means any communication of any kind made through the use of a computer online service, Internet service, or any other means of electronic communication, including but not limited to a local bulletin board service, Internet chat room, electronic mail, or online messaging service.

(3) "Interactive computer service" means any information service, system, or access software provider that provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a computer server, including a service or system that provides access to the Internet and such systems operated or services offered by libraries or educational institutions.

(4) "Telecommunications service" means the offering of telecommunications for a fee directly to the public, regardless of the facilities used.

C. An offense committed pursuant to the provisions of this Section may be deemed to have been committed where the communication was originally sent, originally received, or originally viewed by any person.

D.(1) Except as provided in Paragraph (2) of this Subsection, whoever commits the crime of cyberbullying shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars, imprisoned for not more than six months, or both.

(2) When the offender is under the age of seventeen, the disposition of the matter shall be governed exclusively by the provisions of Title VII of the Children's Code.

E. The provisions of this Section shall not apply to a provider of an interactive computer service, provider of a telecommunications service, or a cable operator as defined by the provisions of this Section.

F. The provisions of this Section shall not be construed to prohibit or restrict religious free speech pursuant to Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution of Louisiana.

Acts 2010, No. 989, §1.

People are acting like this is the first time this shite has ever happened.

I guarantee kids have killed themselves in seperate social eras due to intense bullying over the last 50 years.

Bump.

Charges dropped on the girls. They have to attend counseling supposedly. Not a surprising result.
