Close friend of the Phillips family tells me former Oilers coach (and Wade's dad) Bum Phillips is not expected to live through the week, so prayers please.

Faith, Hope and BUM!!!

Prayers sent. God's speed.

ETA: Faith Hope and Bum!

That was one HELL of a first year draft. Perhaps best in Saints History.

Coming off the worst season ever in New Orleans, 1981 began with the resignation of General Manager Steve Rosenbloom. Shortly thereafter, owner John Mecom hired Bum Phillips to take over one of the NFL's worst teams of all time. Bum Phillips had enjoyed great success with the Houston Oilers, bringing them to 3 consecutive playoff appearances. Two of those appearances brought Houston all the way to the AFC 2championship game. Saints fans were hoping he could do the same in the city that the NFL forgot.

He began his work at New Orleans by drafting Heisman Trophy winner and Earl Campbell clone George Rodgers with the number one pick of the collage draft. Rodgers would lead the league in rushing with 1,674 yards (setting a new rookie rushing record) and be named Sporting News Rookie of the Year. He had a total of 9 100+ yards rushing in 9 games.

The 1981 draft also brought in a wealth of talent to the struggling Saints. Along with Rodgers, some other notable draft picks were Dave Wilson (1st round supplemental) and defensiveback Russell Gary (2nd round). With the second-round pick from San Diego (received for runningback Chuck Muncie) we picked Rickey Jackson of Pittsburgh. Jackson's rookie year was nothing short of spectacular leading the team in sacks with 8. His numbers were 125 tackles (85 solo), 10 passes defended and 2 fumbles caused. Some other players taken were defensive end Frank Warren (3rd round), tight end Hoby Brenner (3rd round), corner back Johnnie Poe (6th round), fullback Hokie Gajan of LSU (10th round) and defensive end Jim Wilks (12th round).

Kinda interesting fact about Bum, I think he was good friends with Bear Bryant when the Bear coached A&M and Bum was a high school coach in Texas.

Bum brought some respectability to the Saints. They were a complete joke prior to his arrival. I've always liked and appreciated the way he and Wade conducted themselves. Both are were good for the game. Wade continues to be.

Poor Wade Phillips was forced to start Rob Johnson over Doug Flutie by Bills ownership.

That one decision could have changed a lot for him and the NFL at that time.

When you get the time check out this NFL film about Bum.

LOST TREASURES XXI

ETA;

A list of great quotes from him !

"There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired."
"I always thought I could coach. I just thought people were poor judges of good coaches."
"I've never seen a hammer and tong game like that one."
"The harder we played the behinder we got."
"Mama always said that if it can't rain on you, you're indoors." (Explaining why he wouldn't wear his cowboy hat in a domed stadium)
"Dallas Cowboys may be America's team, but the Houston Oilers are Texas' team."
"I never scrimmage Oilers against Oilers...what for? Houston isn't on our schedule." (Source: The Book of Sports Lists)
(To an official) "Hey, can I, can I tell you one thing? That's three holding penalties on one football team in a quarter and a half. (Pauses) That ain't funny."
(To an official) "Now, you can't do that! If you do it, I'm telling you you'll have more hell over it than a little bit."
(after playing the Steelers for the fifth time in two seasons and planning to meet them a sixth time) "The road to the Super Bowl runs through Pittsburgh, sooner or later you've got to go to Pittsburgh.
(20 years after playing Pittsburgh six times in two seasons) "Don't take long to spend all the time you want in Pittsburgh."
(referring to Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula) "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."
(referring to Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon) "That boy could throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet."
(when asked about Oilers RB Earl Campbell's inability to finish a one-mile run in training camp) "When it's first and a mile, I won't give it to him."
(when asked by Bob Costas why he took his wife on all of the Oilers' road trips) "Because she's too ugly to kiss goodbye."
"Last year we knocked on the door. This year we beat on it. Next year we're going to kick the son of a bitch in."
of Earl Campbell, "I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but whatever class he's in, it don't take long to call the roll."

Bum was one of my favorite coaches as a kid. Still say that team would have won a SB if it weren't for Pittsburgh and that kinda got jipped in 79. That was a TD catch

Sorry to hear this. Death doesn't miss anyone in the long run
