We're going on a trip in a few days, and I need to rent a car. From what I have read, my Visa Signature card has adequate rental protection for any car that I have rented and paid for with the credit card. Does anyone have any experience with this? I love the fact that I can get a car for $6 a day, but am still scared about not having the rental company's insurance coverage.

Please, make me feel better about this!

Carefully peruse the actual contract. Also search online to see if people have had trouble making claims, but bear in mind that internet reviewers aren't always honest.

Chances are that your own insurance will cover the rental car as a temporary replacement vehicle (your existing deductibles would apply). The coverage from the credit card company picks up where your insurance leaves off.

Most rental contracts require you to pay a hefty deductible out-of-pocket in the event of damage. You'll eventually recover it once the insurance companies sort things out but your money could be tied up for a long time.

I worked for in this industry for years. Most companies will make you pay your deductible for any loss that occurs. You may also be at risk for paying for loss of use or depreciation in the case of any damage.

If you only need the car for a few days just pay the $10-20 a day for coverage. Anything happens, turn over the keys and go about your day. Anything over 3-4 days, just use your own insurance.

Was on a trip once and a buddy rented a vehicle and got the most expensive insurance that the rental car company offered. We all thought he was crazy to get the extra insurance but on the trip someone actually backed into him and caused quite a bit of damage. He was able to walk into the rental car company, hand them the keys, sign a little paperwork and walk away with no other hassle. I have never purchased the insurance through the rental car company because my current existing insurance covers me but for him it worked out to perfection for him on this trip.

Most of the time your own insurance will not cover the "loss of use" meaning you will be renting the car while it is repaired

lots of times that only covers the rental car, no liability coverage if you hit someone/something else.

I own my own insurance business. If you have personal car insurance- that insurance automatically extends to your rental car. Bottom line. Only buy their insurance your company is paying for it and your company wants a higher limit of liability than you have.
