Good things from yesterdays game

Let's step back and look at some of the positives.

The Offense
Kenny Stills and Khiry Robinson had big games and scored their first NFL touchdowns.

Kenny Stills stats:
3 receptions 64 yards 1 touchdown

Khiry Robinson stats:
7 carries 53 yards 7.6 ypc 1 touchdown

I really want Brees and Stills to work on trusting each other. I think Stills will be a mainstay on this team for a long time.

I think Bryce Harris played well for his first action of the season. Possible replacement for Strief going forward. Hell, possible replacement now.

Also, the run game went better than it has all year.

All total we had 26 rushes for 131 yards (5.0 ypc) and 1 touchdown.

The Defense

Besides that prevent at the end of the game, the defense played well.

Keenan Lewis got his 2nd interception of the year.

The defense as a whole had 5 sacks. It feels like we didn't even have that many total last year.

Jenkins had 1.5, Lofton, Jordan & White had 1 sack each and Humber had 1/2 a sack.

Rafael Bush was second in total tackles with 11 tackles. He had some big hits yesterday.

The defense also had 7 hits on the QB and 7 tackles for loss.

I think Humber may have played his best game. I want to see him and Junior on opposite sides more often.

Good ball security, no fumbles.

Sproles was money as usual.

Watson made some plays.

It was ok though. We ran through the holds.

We played well in a lot of aspects. I'm not down on the team. We could run the ball late in the game. Khiry looks good and Stills is contributing and making teams think twice about him. Jenkins is still benefitting a ton from this scheme. May have been Rafael's best game of the season. He was all over the place.

The only thing I didn't like was the 3rd down defense. We seemed to play pretty well on the first two downs and then they would find ways to get past the markers on 3rd down consistently....making for long drives.

I'm not worried. Winning in NE is tough. 5-1 at the bye is solid and with the minor injuries that occured, it's good we have an off week.

Before you start tooting your horn around here, let me mention the Pats roster yesterday -- it was devoid of talent on both sides of the ball due to injuries.

Now, despite the fact that the Pats had no defense, no Gronk, etc., the Pats still won a close game.

Conversely, the Saints were not decimated by injuries, and could not close out with the win.

My point is that, while I applaud your efforts to put a smiley face on this, it was a very bad loss.

I can understand this loss, if the Pats were healthy, but, they were completely decimated and out-manned.

If the game was 59 minutes long, we would have won.

When the ref picked up the flag and said no holding because the defender escaped the hold, I couldn't believe it.

The refs were making shite up on the spot to aid the Pats.

re: Good things from yesterdays game

After giving up 17 points and 232 yards of offense in the first half, the defense adjusted and allowed just 74 yards until the fateful final 70-yard drive.
They sacked Tom Brady five times and allowed just 33 percent of the third-downs they faced to be converted.
The offense, held to just seven points and 130 yards in the first half, rang up 231 yards and put up 20 points in the final 30 minutes...
... listen closely to Greer, Collins, Galette and others in the locker room and you hear, through the bitter tone, that their thoughts Sunday were positive, maybe amazingly so considering how the game ended.
“I don’t feel like we took a step backward,” Galette said. “It sounds crazy, but I think we took a step forward today. We know who we are as a team.”
“The bye week, it woulda been a lot nicer and more enjoyable to go in with a win,” Collins added. “But 5-1 is a pretty good start to this season. We know this team is special.”
They’re also humble again, and that’s a dangerous thought for the rest of the league.

For rookies, or players who haven't produced much yet they did. But on the whole 63 yards receiving is good, not a big game. 50 yards rushing is good, not a big game though. I agree it was good signs to see them doing well, if only they can be involved more, throughout an entire game instead of just the 4th quarter.

A lot of people are getting this wrong. We rushed 4 and even blitzed on that last drive a few times.

This was as good a loss as there can be, if there is such a thing. It level sets expectations and reminds the team and coaches there's definitely room to improve.

buffalo better bring some lube.

Yes, the defense made some really good adjustments the second half.

I think the offense played better as well. We went to the run more, but not enough.

So, losing a staring OLB ( or two if you count Smith) a starting ILB (presumably...definitely lost your leader, Vilma) your 3rd best cover CB, your starting SS, starting NT, your DL depth (Walker), your 2nd and 3rd WR and your starting RT.....Not to mention Ingram.

Yeah, we aren't decimated by injuries.

that the Pats had no defense

Yeah, they are only giving up 14 pts per game (before yesterday). Ok, so now they have no defense.

re: Good things from yesterdays game

Bunkley played yesterday
Vilma wouldn't be as good as Hawthorne or Humber
Smith, ditto above
Is Bush better than Harper? Someone many have been pleading to lose his starting job.

While depth is good, we weren't really given the chance to substitute. Who knows how much Walker would have played.

We lost the OLB prior to the season, we have planned accordingly. Losing their defensive players during the season doesn't give you the time to get a good enough replacement.

The Patriots were definitely hit harder than the Saints with the Injuries.

re: Good things from yesterdays game

No need to sugar-coat it, it was a bad loss.

The Pats were out-manned. The Pats had more injuries to key personnel. Tom Brady won the game anyway.

I'm glad that the team is not down about the loss. It was a bad loss, but, the team has to learn to be resilient.

Nobody wins all of the games, so, this is not a big deal overall. That said, this was a bad loss. The game was in hand, and the Saints snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Let's not sugar-coat it. It is what it is.

Let's not fight and try to scratch eyes like girls, let's just be men and admit that this was a bad loss. Anytime you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it's a bad loss.

There are good things to build on, but it's still a bad loss. If you mean "good things" to be the same as "things to build on", then, I can agree with that.

It was a bad loss, but, there were some good things to build on and lessons to be learned.

Now, who wants to disagree with me here?
