people want to be entertained.

if they can stay home and still be entertained, or even outside of the stadium at a tailgate, they will.

especially if it's in HD.

why attendance is down:

quote:

1. The economy
2. HD TV
3. parking
4. piss poor OOC home games
5. increased security looking for alcohol
6. terrible contraflow planning
7. no smoking inside the stadium (implemented in 2010?)
8. not wanting to deal with the bullshite around campus altogether

but you know what? LSU is adding what? 8,000 more seats?

and guess what? they'll be bought and paid for.

however attendance won't be much better.

77k attendance for florida? that's pretty shitty.

it's like every game is a preseason game leading up to Bama. That's the only game everyone cares about.

Because many of us remember how it was before it became a shitshow.

Look, we all get that it is hot and crowded. The constant dumping on the fan base gets old though, and it is starting ( people in the stands) to show.

LSU is a first class program being managed by third rate talent.

LSU should go ahead and lead the charge of selling beer until the 3rd quarter and be done with it.

I mentioned it in my last post, but the no smoking also put a dent into the attendance.

smokers want to smoke, and you tell them that they can't for 3 hours?

ain't happening

When you have an exclusive product you don't sell more ads for less, you sell fewer ads for more. This isn't small-market radio, this is a Top Ten college football program. Get people in there that know selling, not some numbnuts that only knows how to call prospects and take orders.

They aren't very creative either. Instead of having fans resent the score board advertisers make them provide a fan service. If I where an advertiser I'd jump at the chance. On the score board they could reduce the coke ad during timeouts to a banner with the coke timeout SEC score board underneath. Maybe have the Coke NCAA scoreboard on the other side. Have the peoples choice instant replay boards/drive highlights on the outsides. Then maybe instead of people accommodating and ignoring a set symbol we would actually notice the ads.

I heard this and can't figure it out unless they simply want to cash them in. There will just be more empty seats. Boy, Tiger Stadium when I was a student (1980's) was awesome. Now pales in comparison. It's a shame.

I've stated several times, television has had far more impact than the cost of going to the game, or maybe they help contribute to one another. When a game is on television it is easier to sit at home rather than deal with the hassle of going to a game. But every ticket is technically sold anyway, people just choose not to show up.

As to the OP, I think that you made a few very insightful observations and comments.

As far as my experience yesterday, I thought many of the same things.

I love TS. It really IS like coming home for me. I've only been home a few hours from a great visit there and am very much looking forward to my next trip down (Furman).

I really can't think of any arguments to your OP...but I'm coming in late to a twelve page thread. I'm sure that the peanut gallery hammered you.

it's the absolute truth though

HDTV has made going to the actual game not that appealing

unless it's bama

I posted this earlier....

quote:

Through six weeks, stadiums are over 96 percent capacity in 2013. Texas A&M is busting at the seams with 105% capacity, while Missouri is filling just 86% capacity. Georgia, Texas A&M, South Carolina, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are all averaging 100% capacity.

LINK

So it isn't just an LSU issue, and I have countless other post since last night showing that it is a nation wide problem. With UGA/Penn State Athletic Directors talking about it and others.

I dont agree. I was pleading with fans to stand up and cheer for the 03 team. They had no interest what so ever. This is what happens when you expect a victory everytime. Spoiled fan base is spoiled.

Remember, this is the same fan base that wants to fire a coach with 91 wins in 8.5 years.

I'm telling you, people don't realize how much the no smoking rule has affected attendance.

What you said here is neither insane nor isolated.

I'm not leaving my AC and Big screen HDTV
And this is the real reality of why not only LSU is seeing attendance dip, but across the broad spectrum of college football, this same trend is being ominously noted. And not to mention the same thing is going on in the vaunted NFL.
quote:

I'm not leaving my AC and Big screen HDTV
And sure enough, more and more people are picking up this refrain. And add to it the list of things you cited...

Ticket prices
Piped in music
Overzealous searches
No smoking
Traffic
Parking
Parking prices
Ads everywhere
No WiFi
Corporations
Day games
Mike the Tiger never comes
Concession prices
...why, you have the perfect conditions for the perfect storm.

I'm not leaving my AC and Big screen HDTV for it.

Throw in gas prices too. There are people who drive from hours away to go to the game. They may rethink going a few times with the money you have to spend. Hotel prices are also higher. I'm really surprised at how much I am paying for an average hotel room for homecoming.

CBS timeouts are ridiculous both in length and in number.

For some reason, it seems they last twice as long sitting in the stadium than when you're at home.

My seats are in the North EZ. I can tell you exactly why the stadium looked like crap at kickoff, because 25,000 people were trying to buy water. It's crazy how long it takes to buy water or take a piss. Why would anybody want to miss half a quarter to wait in line for water. During day games LSU should have vendors walking up and down the aisles selling water.

So for the fans that make it to the games just realize that you may very well be uncomfortable and have to wait in long lines for concessions, parking will be a challenge and it might take you a while to walk from your vehicle to the stadium. You'll be waiting during timeouts and after the game traffic will be hell.. It seems to me that if you can make it through all of this alive and in good health then there's no damn reason that you can't holler your arse off for your LSU Tigers for whom you've gone through great lengths to watch play. Channel all of the frustration and angst against what Tiger Stadium is today and give the opponent hell! never sit down, don't leave until the game is over & be as loud and as proud as you can possibly be and have some fun while you're at it.. If we take all the negativity for everything stated here and turn it into passion for our school we'd be everything we used to be as fans and the fan experience would be vastly improved because of us. The atmosphere would be electric every game if us fans wanted it to be

Was thinking about this while driving home from FU game... I'd like to add some thoughts.

These are interdependent.

Disclaimer: I'm one of those TAF season ticket holders, I haven't had my season tickets that long (finally making enough $), I sat through the AU game till first v-formation and :42 left in FU game.

1. Wake up the Hate!
This is the "we're spoiled" comment. But with a slight twist. Yes, we've gotten used to winning. Nothing wrong with that. But there is a certain segment of the LSU attendee market that has almost only seen LSU win 86% of the time. They didn't live through the Gator poundings (and trash talking), didn't see Riggins destroy LSU and UT plant the flag. They didn't see Sean Alexander almost on his own ruin a signature win for DiNardo. Tack on the idea that "hate" is too strong of a word for most organizations and we have a portion of the fanbase that for them every game is like the other. For many of us, an SEC game is AN SEC GAME! With special hate for each and every SEC opponent based on something.

2. Marketing... The Hate
I consider this the starting point for counteracting the necessary evil of such things as TAF points. Other than XX% of the student population who saw anything other than the CBS commercials (which suck) drumming up excitement for the UF game? no, no one. because it doesn't exist. Basic business principle, if the excitement/want/need for your product doesn't exist... create it via marketing. If the school wants asses in the seats (as opposed to just tickets purchased), then market it. And I say market it in a way where every arse in the seat is there to see an arse whooping, hard hits, and swag. Not just a victory. In other words, create the hate.

3. Us Old Farts
yes, hard not to make excuses for my demographic. But every one 28 and younger lumps us all into one group. Firstly, the 32 - 50 yr old group, which I am in, we HATE. Look around the SEZ (non-students), or East Side. It looks different than the W side. The really old farts have the seats on the W locked up. On the W side and SEZ there is a lot of 30's, 40's, and some 50's. So lets just set the record straight there first. I kind of understand the really old farts not showing up. They want to support LSU, the easiest way is to give money. It is not easy to come to the games. Just the way it is. However, LSU can do something to mitigate this. Possibly give minimal TAF points (0,1? 0.25?) to the old farts that give their unused tickets to students that don't make the cut for the student section is an idea. There's got to be more ways of doing this, and tying it to better marketing and TAF would be beneficial.

4. Technology and Attendence
The USPS can relate to this one. I grew up in Houma. Often to see an LSU game (or Saints game with blackout rules) you had to go to the games. Now, with ESPN3 and digital atennas you can watch the game from right outside Death Valley and still get your tailgate on!! Or, like the old farts, support your school by giving money and watch it from home. Unlike previous decades you didn't have to cross your fingers and hope that Jefferson Pilot was kind enough to show LSU instead of AU or MSU. LSU is televised every week now. Thanks to our schedules lately, it's often one of the better games on too. This has to be a factor; just not sure if huge or just equal with some of the others.

I'm clueless how to battle the corporate issue. That's everywhere now-a-days. Is it a necessary evil? Eh, maybe not with LSU being a national brand. If they marketed the brand better, especially in TX, LA, and MS maybe it wouldn't even be necessary.

And the excuses... yeah, parking sucks (getting worse). Cops at UF game just randomly redirected traffic and you couldn't get to wherever you wanted to park anyway. AU was a frigging mud puddle of biblical proportions. The concession stands ran out of water Saturday. blah. I personally, find it hard to miss a game despite all this. Maybe when I get even older, that will change. Maybe after I've had my season tickets for over a decade I'll decide I am supporting my school sufficiently. But for now, to see us run it down UF's throat and NOT see a LSU team fight and fight and still lose because they're just not as talented is fricking worth it!!
