Historical Perspective of LSU Athletics

As I have mentioned previously, I have not been a lifelong follower of LSU Athletics. My sister went to LSU about 10 years ago and have been a casual observer since that time. Spending time on this site reveals my lack of historical perspective when it comes to LSU sports. It appears to be rich in tradition with an extremely loyal fan base. I have become intrigued with the history and culture after even a brief time here.
Can you recommend a good source, preferably a book, that provides a comprehensive history of LSU Athletics or Football in particular?

This is a good place to start. Has all the old Advocate stories and pictures of big games of the past, all the way back to the '30s. Plus great columns about the history and traditions.

Is that the best pic the advocate could have used?

Well that's actually the first installment of the book, published around 1999 or so. There was a re-issue:

There is a section of this site that deals with LSU history for football
LSU History
It Never Rains in Tiger Stadium by John Ed Bradley is a great book
Shooting the Pistol: Courtside Photos of Pete Maravich at LSU is another favorite of mine.
And of course, LSUSports.net is the official site for all LSU athletics.

Yeah, that movie will definitely give you all you need to know. Incredible work. OP was looking for books mostly though.

Peter Finney's Fighting Tigers.
He's printed several editions, each a bit updated. I don't know when the last one was done, but it gives pretty much the definitive historical picture of LSU Football.

I have the second edition--It's excellent. It goes back to the first season in 1893 through 1980 and actually has the rosters of the players on each year's team and their hometowns going back to the first season.

This. The Finney one(s) are incredible works. Some real history in depth game by game season by season work, football wise
Scott rabalais did the most recent update as Finney in up there age wise. 93-2008 (2007 season)
It's good work too. Some interesting things said by some coaches after their tenure here. I use the book often for reference
Dinardo- "best job I ever had"
Saban never came to campus before taking the job
Miles thought LSU wouldn't call back after OSU got rolled in the Alamo bowl by the other OSU
President Bush (old one) called skip and asked him to consider RC Slocum after Saban left.

I appreciate all of the book, movie and web resource references. I hope to find copies of a couple of the books and watch the movie shortly. Thanks to each of you for your knowledge, time and effort.
Good luck to the Tigers Saturday.
