Gonna buy a new deer rifle soon.

Got a little extra cash. Thinking a 25-06 or 308? Any suggestions.
Also- The only big game I hunt is hogs and deer. Only large rifle I have is a 30-06. Leaning toward this savage.. If I got that package I would put on a Leupold and just put that scope on my .22
Wanna keep it under 600. My 30-06 kicks like a mule, it has sick knockdown power but I would like something that I can group extremely tight at 200 yds.

I just bought a .308 myself. After doing some research I found that the .308 round begins to experience drop at 200 yards. I'm not familiar with the particular Savage you linked so I can't speak to its accuracy. .308 ammo should be easier to find than 25-06 if that helps your thought process.

the .308 can be either or depending upon which ammo you use. It is one of the most used rounds in history. thats what i would do. plus the ammo can be found anywhere if the shtf.

Good answers. I'm not concerned about finding the ammo. My gf is in Shreveport, I live in Baton Rouge and my lease is in Farmerville (by Ruston). So I travel pretty much the entire state about twice a month.

My personal experience is that .308 ammo is fairly easy to lay my hands on locally. I found both hunting and target ammo.

308 for sure.. savage great rifle, good choices. own several savages and a savage 308

The scope that comes on that Savage is what I have on my 17 WSM. It will do fine on a .22 LR. That Savage also has an AccuTrigger. Buy it and wreck shop out to 200 yards.

What makes Union Paris pines produce such nice deer. It is nice up there. farming? Seems to be all pines from what I have seen

Benefit of 308/223 vs anything else is there is a crap ton of published and verified information as to what the round does in the air. That makes it infinitely easier to make wind calls and elevation adjustments.

You know, I subscribe to the "find ammo anywhere" theory, but recent experience has shown me that 308 gets scarce as hens teeth in an ammo rush.

I can't answer that question. It is all pine... there are no crops there. I'm guessing it has to be a sheer numbers thing. It's not densely populated, meaning lots of deer habitat.

Get the .308. Short action. More accurate. Not as bad a recoil. Been researched and experimented with for accuracy probably more than any other round. Kills the hell out of whitetails and hogs.
If you've already got a 30-06 there's no reason to get a necked down version of it.

Love my savage 14 classic in 7mm-08, it never misses and they fall within 40 yds
