Classic example of fight or flight. Duran knew on that night he couldn't beat Ray. He chose the flight option.

Duran is even still lying about saying 'no mas.' He got fat, wasn't prepared and Sugar Ray made his arse quit before he got beat up and embarrassed. Just like ortiz quit against maidana (and lopez)

Leonard didn't beat Hagler. He bought that fight. It's amazing that Leonard never lost a fight in Vegas. He lost the Hagler and Hearnes fights but was gifted a decision and a draw.

Yep. Pretty fricking pathetic. Cosell made that up? Please . Speaking of Howard Cosell. I was 11 at the time. What a friggin icon. It brings a smile to my face every time I see a clip of him.

Duran got lazy in his preparation for the fight and was getting schooled badly by a hungry opponent. He simply said "frick it I quit". He was getting paid a huge sum of money and wasn't gonna allow himself to get embarrassed in the ring any longer so he gave up. He can say what he wants but everyone knows this is what happened.

I'll say this though...Roberto Duran is, IMO, the second greatest fighter in boxing history. Duran was a natural lightweight and he was an unstoppable force in the ring during that time. He wasn't the same at the heavier weights so people need to stop putting him down for not having the best record vs Leonard, Hagler, Hearns. Those guys were larger fighters and Duran was past his peak by the time he got to Hearns and Hagler.

Remember that when both Duran and Leonard were at their best and focused, it was Duran who took Leonard off his game and beat him up.

That's why Leonard is still butthurt about Duran quitting. Sugar Ray was ready to whip him and Duran wouldn't give him the satisfaction.

That was a solid 30 for 30.

ETA: It actually sounds like ray put it behind him after talking to roberto for the show.

Yep. Duran took his ball and went home. You can't do that in sports.

Getting your arse kicked is more honorable than quitting.

This is how that matchup should be remembered.

It was Duran, who had 70 fights at lighter weight classes, that moved up in weight for this fight.

Boxing, especially back then, is just one of those sports where the first match-up is usually the purest and most telling.

Anything after that, and the sport is downgraded by those looking to make a buck imo.

It was 95% good. The other 5% was over-produced, but it didn't ruin it.

Look at it from Duran's perspective. He'd already beaten SR after moving up in class.

How many times are you supposed to kick a guy's arse that's naturally bigger than you to prove a point?

The money was prolly too much for Duran to turn down, but again these guy's weren't natural sized rivals, SR was the bigger man.

Two very distinct point of views concerning this matchup.

Guess that's why they made a 30 for 30 about it.

Good 30 enjoyed it, and remember those fights as a kid.

Duran still copped out on his explanation to Leonard on 'No Mas'..then Leonard also sorta cheeky and not truly apologetic for not giving an quickly aging Duran his deserved Trilogy for another 8 or 9 yrs, until when it was a much safer fight for SRL.

To have grown up a SRL, Hagler, Hearns fan, and watched the documentary, it gave me a greater appreciation for Duran, whom though I respected as a great champion, was like most Americans in vilifying him in youth for his Liston-esque bad@ss bully persona, and easily labeled him a quitter after 'No Mas'..as noted at the end..Duran definitely a Top 10er All-Time.

I do think Hagler should have gotten the decision, but Leonard did!

In '81, both in their prime, and Hearns coming in at 32-0 (30 KO's), Leonard had the big 13th round and stopped the hit man in the 14th. Leonard never ducked anyone! In the 2nd fight with Hearns...1989...they were both past their primes, Leonard had had eye surgery and was attempting another comeback...Hearns dropped him twice I think, and although Leonard finished strong, was lucky to get the draw...I agree with you that Hearns really won, but the '81 fight against Hearns was the one that counted to me and cemented Leonard as a great!

Both fighters were GREAT.

Leonard did have all the hype, but the dude could fight and was tough.

Duran was a beast, especially at lightweight. Could argue that Lightweight Duran was P4P the best ever. (Yeah I said it).

The first fight, I thought that Duran (and Leonard himself) took SRL out of his game. Duran kept coming, but I also think Leonard wanted to prove he could slug with him. That was a great fight.

2nd fight, Duran was soft and weak.

Too bad we don't get to see fights like those anymore.

This was one of my least favorite 30 for 30 shows. The part where Sugar Ray thought he was going to be like an AA sponsor to Duran was horrible. I was only 6 in 1980 so I wasn't into boxing. I only knew of Sugar Ray in his later years. Duran kicked his arse in that first fight.

The only entertainment from this episode is that I never realized how much Christie Brinkley was into boxing and she is still fine as shite today. I needed subtitles for when Tyson was speaking. I understood Duran more and I don't speak Spanish.

It seems like SRL is getting an answer for No Mas, but not the answer he wants. He wants Duran to admit that he got whipped and that SRL made him quit. Seems like Duran has moved on, so should SRL.

Just like Tyson against Holyfield.

Atlas said Tyson would do anything, anything to get out of a fight if he was getting his bitch arse handed to him after a few rounds. It was no surprise Tyson bit Holyfield's ear to Atlas - that was Tyson begging for the fight to stop w/o having to be a punk and quit himself.

Quit, DQ - same thing.

This.

Does Sugar Ray need a public confession? Why?

The public concluded long ago that Duran quit.

So why bring it up 30+ years later?

Sugar Ray needs to get off the rag!

Everyone loves stories of the heavyweights of that day that are friends and are always telling the other that they won.

But neither man respects the other. One is a man's man--the other a woman's man.

Sugar Ray would be a great guest on Oprah. But in Panama the men would want to kick his arse...

Come to think about it I would want to kick his arse if I could!
