Does anything beat Nirvana's unplugged version of "Where did you sleep last night?"

Not that I can think of. The look on his eyes when he looks up into the camera and sings the last verse sends chills down my spine every time I think of it. He still had several months to live but he'd already checked out inside.

Layne Staley's lyrics and vocal from 'Don't Follow' off the Jar Of Flies EP comes close.

I like Lead Belly's version. He spent some time in Angola.

I would imagine being at Darrell Abbott's last show qualifies.

I was thinking more of Staley's performance of "Down in a Hole" on their unplugged performance.

Alice in Chains - Down in a Hole - Unplugged

Even though he would live another 5 1/2 years, this is one of his final performances with AIC.

A close second would be Nutshell from the same concert - my personal favorite AIC song, also with ominous, "death approaching" lyrics.

Alice in Chains - Nutshell - Unplugged

ETA: The heroin had him bad, but his voice was still fairly strong at this point.

Nutshell - Alice in Chains

Good call on that one.

The studio version along with Don't Follow are incredible tracks from Jar of Flies

I like everything on Jar of Flies, except Swing on This. I like most of the tracks on Unplugged - I'm torn on which version of Nutshell (my favorite AIC song) and it is on both albums - probably leaning towards Unplugged, but they're close.

Nutshell by far, followed closely by Down in a Hole.

Sure, Cobain had checked out and that brief glare at the end is haunting, but Stanley's songs are more tragic and on stage he was clearly fighting the demons just as much as Cobain.

If Cobain hadn't checked out for good a few months later, there would be no debate that Nutshell and Down in a Hole are top of the list.

When you compare the music...there shouldn't even be a debate.

Meh - Nirvana had a better drummer than and a comparable bass player to AIC. AIC had the better guitar player/harmony vocalist and lead vocalist. Lyrics - push. Music - edge AIC.

On balance, I have AIC in the lead - but, of course, as this is music/art, much of the opinion is subjective.

AIC had a better unplugged concert/album, as well.

I was never the biggest fan of either and I was a kid when they were both big.

But nirvana def had better songwriting.

You must be drunk

Nirvanas acoustic set is a top 5 acoustic performance of all time pop/rock.

Meh.

AIC's Unplugged is much better to me. And I like Nirvana - I never really got the Beatles-esque attention they got - but I like them - Cobain seems like one of those classic Rock and Roll tortured souls - he was an outstanding lyricist and a serviceable singer/guitarist. And, there's no question Nirvana put grunge on the map. Grohl was the great musician there, to be honest, though, not Cobain.

Not sure what it means, but ive come to really be mesmerized by AICs unplgged far more than nirvanas over the years. And I was a total nirvana fanboy from the moment I heard bleach

You know - before they recorded Jar of Flies, Cantrell didn't even own an acoustic guitar. He had to borrow the bass player, Mike Inez's for the recording. By the time they did Unplugged, he had a deal with Guild.
