Has the Pelicans lumped in the "Western Conference Morass" tier, i.e. the fight for the 7-8 seed with DEN, DAL, MINN, and POR.

quote:

New Orleans Pelicans

Perhaps the most exciting team among this bunch, but also the one with the most to prove — and the one least likely to sneak into the playoffs without a great deal of injury-related luck. The Pellies plan to start Greg Stiemsma at center, and it will be interesting to see how much Monty Williams will go with the Ryan Anderson–Anthony Davis front line. That duo has the potential to unlock some serious spacing and firepower, but it was also flammable defensively last season.

quote:

Finding a way to keep two of the Eric Gordon–Jrue Holiday–Tyreke Evans trio relevant when one of them has the ball will be a challenge, but it's one Williams should be able to pull off. Holiday is a solid 3-point shooter, and Gordon was a sniper before two straight lost seasons. Evans is a trickier issue. His commitment to cutting away from the ball comes and goes, and his jumper mostly goes — despite an uptick from deep last season. But he made strides as a pick-and-roll distributor in Sacramento, and has shown inklings of a post game.

quote:

The Pellies just have a ton to sort out, on both sides of the ball and with Williams's rotation — plus some major potential depth issues. If Davis makes a giant leap on both ends, steadying himself on defense and working his off-the-bounce game more effectively on offense, this is a different conversation.

In relation to the LAL thread here a week ago, Lowe has the Lakers in the "Just Plain Bad" tier with Charlotte and Sacramento.

I will say that I was wrong about Dallas. If they stay healthy I think they'll be in the mix. I previously had them at the bottom of our tier but they looked pretty solid.

I agree. I buried them, but Dirk is still awesome. They will be a grease fire on defense, but they will be in the mix all year long.

how do the pelicans have depth issues?

they could arguably be one of the best second units in the league.

If we consider Holiday, Gordon, Evans, Davis, and Anderson as the people who will play the most minutes, then our backups would be considered Rivers Aminu Morrow Jason Smith and Roberts as the backups. Ive seen better but still potent.

But if they are talking about Evans Anderson Rivers Smith and Roberts as the backups then its top 8 atleast.

On a semi-related note, Bill Simmons and Jalen Rose are previewing each NBA team from worst to first. Anybody want to guess where they have our Pellies ranked?

I say 19th. Bill isn't as high on us and our moves as Papa Pellie is.

One a day from now until the start of the season. Toronto is going to be next followed by the Bucks. We have a shot being ranked above Lakers and Mavs but Simmons didn't like our moves and he loves the Trailblazers and the Pistons moves so I think either 19-20

He really liked the idea of Evans off the bench until we did it. Totally flip flopped. This is my shocked face.

Yes, I don't really see how he really likes the Pistons' moves of getting Josh Smith and Brandon Jennings, but doesn't like the Pelicans getting Tyreke and Holiday.

I mean the Pistons will probably be interesting to watch next season, but I think it could get messy with Jennings and Smith as their two best offensive options.

He loved the idea of him off the bench under Pop. It's not quite the same thing.

He loved the Jrue trade before he found it we included our 2014 lottery pick.

Modeling our system after theirs, sure. But no one gets more from less than Pop.

Plus, he was considering a number of reasons Tyreke would be a great addition to the Spurs. Among them was the roster they have in place already, which is something we don't have.

He wasn't saying Tyreke would automatically be a great bench player anywhere in the league. It was specific to San Antonio.

I assume he would argue the 3, 5, and perhaps the 1 are not very deep positions.

If an injury hits the guards, things could get dicey. Not everyone is as bullish as Pelicans fans are on Rivers.

I'm going to guess that the Pelicans are either next at 22 or maybe they go as high as 21.. here are the teams so far

30. 76ers
29. Magic
28. Suns
27. Jazz
26. Bobcats
25. Kings
24. Celtics
23. Raptors

I would guess they could take another Eastern Conference team next (Pistons, Wiz, Bucks or Cavs), but all those teams made big moves this summer as well. I would think the Pelicans, on paper, have more holes than them. So, I'm guessing Pistons are 22 and Pelicans are 21..

Yeah, I was way off. The next couple of teams were totally different than who I thought..

30. 76ers
29. Magic
28. Suns
27. Jazz
26. Bobcats
25. Kings
24. Celtics
23. Raptors
22. Hawks
21. Cavs

They hinted 20 will be the Wiz. So not sure how the order is going down. It's too many teams from the East. Even Jalen didn't agree with the rankings, cause one of those teams (Hawks, Cavs or Wiz) are making the playoffs in the East. Even with how much better the West can be, the records aren't that stacked in one conference. Kind of a big oversight there..
