New Bank Needed, Suggestions?

I am about to fire Capital One and will need a bank. I don't need anything fancy. I will open 3 checking accounts and a savings account. Who do you guys use? Thanks.

I love USAA for the simple fact I can move money and deposit/have access to checks instantly. And they are just awesome about anything and everything.

Problem is their savings account rates aren't that great, so I would suggest maybe using Ally or someone else for that account.

Thanks. Both banks/CU that you mentioned are online only. Do you ever miss going into a branch for something? What if you get a check that you want cashed?

I do my checking with a bank I can walk into. Savings I maintain online primarily because I don't anticipate needing to pull from savings instantly. I have my savings with Penfed though I am thinking about opening a savings account with either AMEX or Discover.

I haven't been in a bank branch in a long time.

The only real issue is if someone gives you a load of cash, but I don't deal drugs so this isn't a common occurrence. If someone owes me $100 or less I'll just keep it on me and use it when a need arises. But USAA does send you deposit envelopes if you ever did need to do that. Some UPS Stores act as bank branches for USAA but I'm not sure of all the services they can provide as I haven't needed to use them.

As for check cashing, I take a picture of the check and deposit it with my phone into my checking account. I can then visit any ATM I want since USAA refunds $15 a month in ATM fees and mobile deposits are available instantly up to $10,000 per day.

Dont you need to have someone "vertical" to you in the family tree in the armed forces to get an account?

ETA: Left out a rather important prepositional phrase in the question

just checked. looks like anyone can get an account, but for some reason the check deposit by phone is limited to those who qualify for their insurance. to qualify, you, a spouse or parent must have been a usaa member.

I've always used community banks. Just make sure they have a great online/mobile system

Ask your local friends and also the name of a Banker. Go in and introduce yourself. Periodically make visits to a branch.

I followed the same banker for nearly 40 years from branch to branch and bank merger to merger. When you have a problem, you want a real person to help. She was able to put together some very creative financing for me when interest rates were high and we wanted to buy a condo.

I know that banking has changed dramatically and that bankers are somewhat hamstrung these days, but it never hurts to personally know someone.

What was wrong with Capital One? I just opened an account there so I'm curious.

I use chase for my operating account and ucb for rewards checking. It's hard to beat chase as far as online stuff goes.

I have three checking accounts there, one for me, one for the wife and a joint along with savings. I also have a LOC attached to the wife's in case she goes over. To make a long story short I was transferring some cash from my account to the wife's account and accidentally put it in the LOC instead of the wife's account. I then immediately transferred from the LOC into my wife's account as intended. The bank then proceeds to charge me $10 because I transferred out of the LOC. Even though it was obviously a mistake and the LOC never got below its original value. Then the very next day I see a debit and a credit for $115 in the LOC account. I called capital one's 800 number and asked them about the $10 charge and to please remove it and they refused because it was my error. Then I asked about the $115 and they said they made a mistake. So,they make a mistake and it's fine, but if I make a mistake it cost me $10. Little shite like that really pisses me off. There are too many banks out there to treat customers this way.

I know its only 10 and not worth a trip, but if you are in a branch, speak to a banker and they will remove it.

I had issues with a big check that was issued to me by a company bouncing twice because of them switching accounts. Cap One charged me $20 each time and the next time I was in the branch to do something, I went and spoke to a banker and they reversed the charge.

btw, I'm not pro-cap one, just letting you know what I did

Yeah, I have since emailed the guy who opened the accounts and he reversed them but it still pissed me off that "customer service" wouldn't do it.

Agree... But to the national customer service people, you are just a number. To your local branch, you are more of a customer and they are impacted by you pulling your account over dumb shite like that.
