I'll start by saying I am surprised how bad we are as a unit, I knew we weren't going to be as good as 12 or 11 but I didn't expect this.

I'd also be lying if I said I didn't going into the season have my doubts about freak, barrow, and loston being the leaders of those units a la nevis, sheppard, pp7 in 2010. who we're also surrounded by a ton of youth that year.

That said,
-we have the best DC in the country, I truly believe that.
-We have recruited like gang busters and can run with ANYONE.
-Our offense is giving them a million chances to do their job.

I really think that one of these weeks its just going to come together and we're going to be a strong unit again. This isn't a scheme issue or lack of talent, it just takes time to jell, more then we all anticipated or wanted.

Maybe it was the 2nd half of MSU? Maybe it'll be Florida or Ole Miss? It's going to happen and we're all going to say, where was this all along? The only question for me is when. Hopefully its before November. The team we have now can and will go undefeated until Nov. Then it's big boy time.

I agree with ya. Terminology and trust in each man knowing his assignment seems to be the biggest issue and that comes with time. We will turn the corner.

I really want to believe this, but the lack of pressure the front 4 is getting REALLY makes this doubtful.

I don't think he's the best DC in the country, but I think he's plenty good enough to make LSU the number one defense in the country, and that's all that matters.

Yeah we need big improvement from our front. We all knew Mingo would be a big loss, but I felt like Freak would really become a force this year, maybe some nagging injuries are holding him back. Hunter looks the part and looks quick, but he just isn't getting a lot of pressure.

I also thought Rasco would generate a little more heat. None of our guys are "Mingo" good, but they seem to possess a level of talent similar to many of the other SEC teams.

Here's hoping that our defensive guys do like Mett did last year. There was a big difference between "first six games" Mett and "last six games Mett", so I haven't completely given up hope yet.

I agree. I love how so many on here can watch a few games and declare that we have no talent. Amazing that these people aren't NFL scouts, seeing as they are so good at it.

We definitely don't tackle as well as in the past. That's why I want to see more guys like Lacouture and Tre White and L.Louis to get more chances. Those guys not only seem to be getting to the spots, but get there with a nasty streak and ability to make a tackle.

I agree that there should be opportunities for some to get in there and see what happens.

Bottom line, we need someone to step up as a leader, someone the other players look to when they're confused about the coverage or situation. This defense isn't AS talented as it has been, but they're no where close to playing at their talent level. I think/hope Ronald Martin is that guy.

Freak, welter and barrow will rally the troops.

yes, one of the things that bite you with too much youth is a lack of clear direction out there. Ideally, you have a MLB making the front seven calls and a Safety double-checking the secondary is set right.

I think, if Beckwith is as smart as they say, he will eventually be that MLB. But, when?

Martin or Thompson have to step at safety in that regard. I know Loston is an asset on that, or at least you'd think it, but Loston has a tendency to try to cheat and make a big play. This results in a big play the other way. He's also a liability in coverage even when he's playing it right.

We got decent pressure without blitzing Saturday, but it was against a mobile QB who could squirt through if guys got out of their gaps. Several of Dak's big runs came a la first half last year JFF when we got pressure it just took guys out of the gaps.

When we blitz it makes everyone look better, but the DBs haven't shown the stability to allow a ton of blitzing.

Welter is the key, he needs to develop into a real leader on the sidelines, one who keeps everyone fired up and ready to go when their number is called. He could also be extremely valuable helping signal in the defensive plays, this would help with communication issues and getting the calls right.

The Saban defenses were all about pressure on the QB. We had 50 different blitzes. Each one had a state name

I think Loston staying actually set this defense back. I know that's harsh but I think as a senior he kinda backed into the leadership role that he really isn't all that great at. He's an instict player with athleticism, not particularly great at reading personnel grouping and getting others into position. If Loston had gone pro I don't think it takes 4 games for guys to look at Martin as the shot caller, which he seems to be now.
