of course, Overtime didn't start in college football until 1996 (the exception was a trial for the Nevada Bowl--or some such thing to end the 1995).

The 1989 edition was one of several sad chapters in LSU football of lofty preseason rankings with the season going splat. 1974,1983 and 1998 also come to mind.

A real yawner actually until about three minutes were left. LSU led 10-3 at halftime, but behind Emmitt Smith, Florida took a 13-10 lead in the fourth.LSU drove late and faced a fourth down and David Browndyke kicked a 36 yd fg with 1:19 to make it 13-13. Two years ago in a 13-13 tie with Ohio State,Mike Archer emphatically stated LSU would never play for a tie as long as he was there as several questioned his decision to have Tommy Hodson throw from the LSU endzone late in the game.

But Florida kept plugging along and quickly got to the LSU 27. However, like overtime being a few years away, "spiking the football" to stop the clock without it being a penalty for "intentional grounding". Without any time outs, QB Kyle Morris handed off to Smith for three yards but LSU kept him in bounds as Smith fought to get out of bounds.

From the LSU 24,Morris got the Gators lined up and fired a ball to the sidelines that appearedto cross the imaginary plane of the western sideline as time expired. LSU 13 Florida 13. LSU players trot to the locker room and the Florida players mull around pointing to the scoreboard.

Enter Dick Burleson. Burleson, the 'esteemed official' who was the "advisor to the replay official" in Tuscaloosa in 2009 who decided that Patrick Peterson never had control of an interception in bounds, decided, yes sir, there is still one second left on the clock.

With :01 now left, Arden Crzewski, nailed a 41 yard field goal and Florida escaped 16-13.(Unbeknownst to many at the time, Florida coach Galen Hall and AD Bill Arnsparger had hatched a plan where Hall would coach this game and then resign afterwords in the midst of allegations he was paying unauthorized cash payments to former assistants and a former player following a three month investigation.)

I was there. It was my first trip to N.O. and Tiger stadium, Ive been hooked ever since. As the crowd and the teams started to exit the field I watched the head Ref go to the phone on the sideline and told the clock keeper to put one second back on the clock. Made the ride home a lot more enjoyable. Kids will prevent me from making this trip but always love going to the L.S.U. game.
Sad thing about Galen being let go was that the NCAA really didn't have any proof he paid child support for a player. He admitted giving speaking fees to assistants who made the appearences at booster clubs and they took the word of a G.A. about what he THOUGHT was in an envelope given to a Family court judge. Galen said it was a letter explaining that the player would soon be in the NFL and would have plenty of money for child support.

Was in the student section. One of several chapters from the 80's that solidified my hatred for f.u. at the top of my list, and this was prior to Spurrier taking over.

LSU was 18-14-3 against Florida prior to that game, and had never trailed in the series. Of course that game (making us 18-15-3) was the second in a series of 9 straight wins, Spurrier taking over for the 1990 season, and Florida would go 14-2 against LSU from 1988 through 2003 (being the only blemish on the BCS Championship season that year - although Spurrier had given way to [ETC: Ron Zook] at that point).

Yep, I was there. Came out into what was named parking lot 2S right after the kick and in a case of mistaken identity, was jumped from behind and severely beaten. So yes, I remember that game.

This guy works for our company and will not talk about the 2009 game. He really gets irritated when co-workers mention blown calls by SEC officials to him.
