Has anyone trained their own gun dog? What all did you use as far as training aids and instructional videos? Has anyone used a dummy launcher and are they productive? I'll probably send mine off to a trainer but I wanted to try to do some of it myself and see how it goes.

Yes have trained several myself and helped many also. Where are you located, if you want to do it yourself (and you can by the way) the best resource is a retriever club. Books and videos can only get you so far as they never have all the answers to your problems they mainly cover how to establish a program.

If I had to pick a book it would likely be smart works by Evan Graham. One video would be the total retriever series by Mike Lardy.

Duck dog? I've trained my last Lab and the Chessie I have now myself. They both did great in spite of their trainer
Pointer? Ain't got a clue

A dummy launcher with the shoulder attachment is invaluable. Remote launchers are even better. Both can be a bit pricey but they are well worth the $

We start with a cap gun, then 22, & so on. Start young. Gun fire=dog treat.

Trained mine. You can read a ton of stuff on the interwebz but remember each dog will be different. Modify the things you read to fit your dog. The best trainers are the ones that can think outside the box. They test the dog better and get them more hunt ready. Water dog is a great old fashioned style book. I suggest you read cover to cover before you get started. Take the steps as needed and always end your training sessions on a good note. Even if it means going back to the basics for a few minutes. This will be what sticks in the dogs mind the most and if it was him getting his arse beat and slung in the truck good luck next trip.

Do as much homework as you can on a training program prior to getting the dog, whether it is a pointer or retriever. Plenty of resources at your disposal. While many of the books/videos out there may seem pricey, they are worth their weight in gold when you end up with a well mannered and functional gun dog.

The best thing I ever did for mine was make him stay and wait for command before eating...If you can make them wait on food, you can make them hold point or wait on a duck

That's exactly what I did since mine was a pup and still do it now, he will wait for however long you want till you say eat, he does everything I want him to do.

Also pick up water dog and read it helps out but my dog was easy to train. All depends on dog though

I trained my lab and it was pretty easy, but I think it depends on the dog and the level you want to get them. Got a couple DVD's and just spent 15-30 minutes a day with him when he was a puppy. Now we just brush up right before the season and he's good to go. Most imporant thing that I noticed some of my buddies didn't work on is how they act in the boat and in the blind.

Frist thing to do is block off a hallway in your house. Only way out is back to you. throw a small paint roller letting it hit off of the walls doors. You can tell shorlty if pup has the desire and also begin to use the word "here" to return to you with roller in mouth, giving a lot of attending when done correclty.

I have found that when using a launcher the dog develops a habit of looking back at you while waiting on the launcher to go off instead of looking forward.

In my opinion send your dog to get force fetched, which is normally only a couple months, then train him yourself. Mike Lardy's is what I've been training with. Don't go buy all kinds of training stuff if you don't know how to train.

Best thing you can do for training a dog is obedience. If he/she is very obedient then it helps tremendously throughout the rest of training.

I trained my first dog and Im going to train my next dog as well. You have to be willing to put in the time and you will see the results.

Training a dog is about the experience as well.
