Defense as I see it
Posted by dos crystal on 10/6/13 at 8:34 am20
1) we have ONE current stud on defense. K Alexander. He's the only guy we have that can play and probably start on any team in the s.e.c.
2)Welter is not an s.e.c. player, Barrow is a good role player when there is more talented lbs on the field.
3)we don't have a quality safety at this point. Martin isn't physical and is late reading the offense.
4)loston is physical, not a pass coverage guy, much like roman harper. does better when there is a more talented safety playing with him to make the calls and handle coverage.
5)The youth movement has begun at the c.b. position and the future is very bright. Although it's one game, Robinson appears to be the best corner on the team. White is very solid, however he's lost at times. which is expected of a freshman.
6)the defensive line is average at best. Hunter appears to be the most talented player on the line with the most potential. With time, he can be a difference maker. Ego and freak, while they have been really hyped for years, are solid backup rotational dt's. They are not difference makers. Rasco is a solid d.e. more of a role player on defense, not a difference maker.
7)This year is going to be tough watching the defense. It's not all that talented.
8)I think the future is bright. I like what i see out of the freshman cb's. I like what i see out of hunter and alexander. It appears beckwith could be a difference maker at m.l.b.. If we get one guy, bain, gilmor, herron, freak, ego, to step up as a difference maker on the line, and kid like jefferson to step up at safety, this defense, next year, can be as good as we have come to expect.
9) I know corey raymond is getting heat from some fans. I really like the talent he his bringing in at his position. I think he will be fine. We know these guys are getting great coaching. They have been to good for to long. The hard truth is that we are playing with lsu's backup defense from last year and those guys aren't as talented as they were hyped to be.

Have to disagree. He is not very good at all. He is back up quality until proven otherwise.
They should continue the youth movement and replace Welter with Beckwith. He can't be worse.

I want Ron Cooper back at LSU

I have called this for a while now. Welter is not SEC caliber imo and will be a serious liability going forward making any game losable with his play.

Agreed on Welter and Rasco.
59 literally was diving on the ground on lead blocks on sweeps. He did it at least 3 times last night. Pathetic.
I don't want to beat up poor 31 any longer. He is really, really in over his head. He wouldn't start for any other SEC team. Drop of from Minter is beyond huge. Beckwith may be lost but at least he will be able to wrap up once he is in the right area. Welter gets run thru, run around and flat run over on > 90% of plays he is in the area

Beckwith should replace welter.... Agree 100%

Agree with this. The youngsters in the secondary are getting a baptism by fire now. I think we will see improvement each week.

This is something we can all agree on..particularly at the CB position. It will be scary how good these guys become after they take their licks.
Robinson and White will give opposing QBs nightmares.

Welter and Barrow are liabilities going forward. Barrow got picked on and abused last night. Rasco has second string talent and someone should be given a shot here. ANYONE

Does anyone notice how our linebackers excluding Kwon just wait for the block to get to them instead of being aggressive and hitting them first or making a move around it? Our safeties and corners do the same thing. Last night Robinson beat a block to make a tackle and I swear it was the first time it's been done all season. Lets just be honest here. Our defense is horrific and worst of all they're SOFT

And this is a player who couldn't be blocked in high school.
You know the scheme that is used in respect to the kind of players you have may be some cause for downward shift and also the youth overall. The coaches also need to figure out how to get them in position to make plays. The Dbacks are having a hard time staying with the receiver and filling holes at the line.

Agree with most everything.
I hope to see Freak continue making plays. His name was seeming called more last night than any game this season, he's not the dominant DT we are used to but his name being called for something other than the commentators filling time was nice.
I actually noticed some improvement last night, outside of the LB'ers. The secondary was for the most part in position, i didn't see to many coverage breakdowns - and that's a start.

Defense as I see it}
I agree with most of what has been said. The tackling is a big issue. I see lots of outstretched arms and subsequent arm tackling. None of these guys seem to be able to put themselves in a position to run through the player they're tackling.

This js not championship defense by any means. In fact with our offense so good it could be considered championship robbing d. Out o is absolutely championship caliber but the d counters it completely.

Surely he was coached to do this, though I don't understand why.

Try to remember he played on a team that would score a ton of points. Their opponents were always trying to pass to catch up. All he had to worry about was rushing the passer. Also high school OL is a whole lot different than an SEC OL
