Hunting Tip #632,279: Repaint decoys (RESULTS UPDATE 12-8-2013)

I spruce up old decoys with a little flat white and flat black spray paint once the original paint fades or flakes off.

Gotta like those green cheeks I left.

That's one can of each Walmart brand spray paint. Like $2 does a dozen.

Eta: UPDATE

We got some birds in with this weather. The canvasbacks were breaking down hard on the side of the blind we put these decoys. Got a 3 man limit of cans this morning.

I guess it's cheaper than buying new ones.

No. But other ducks have been known to decoy on jack decoys.

It's just a cheap way to give new life to beat up decoys.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be an ass. I have only duck hunted for a few years so I still have a lifetime to learn.

I think it is also interesting hearing the other local names for certain birds. Jacks=ringnecks

How much stock to do you put in decoys matching your desired duck?

Personally I use blue and green wing teal decoys usually in odd numbers along with a couple of pairs of woodies (always paired) and maybe a puddler or 3 set off to the side during teal season.

During big duck season I usually use a mixed bag of puddlers in shallow and divers out deeper but am not sure it makes a difference.

Not much. Most species that you want are pretty sociable so they don't care what the species is. What's really important is your variety and spread.

You also want your variety to match your location. Like being in SWLA it would be really stupid to load up on goldeneyes and canvasbacks.

yeah, Like most I bet I have a majority of mallards and as they age/wear they tend to look more like blacks.

I bought some gaddys, pintail, and widgeon to throw in the mix and seem to get more gaddys to commit now.

Our mix of ducks is usually Gaddys, widgeon, woodies, green wing, and divers. We occasionally get some mallards and pintail.

I have killed mallards while their feet were hanging above black 2 liter bottles and white mini Clorox bottles.

I normally bias my mallard spread towards hen decoys because they are more 'generic' looking. Sounds like maybe I don't need to worry?

Movement in the spread is much more important that decoy quality, in my experience.

Dependent on where you hunt and quantity of decoys a, fine looking decoy or an old coke bottle may have the same effect.

Example: catahoula lake.

You do need some movement but 9/10 a jerk cord works just fine.

Were I hunt, I use more gray's and teal decoys with a few Woodies and mallards thrown in.

A lot of people I know who hunt south of Houma say they used to hunt with painted 2 liters. Never actually seen it, but they say it works well enough.

Used to put out a few hundred on Catahoula, they work well. I turn must of my old decoys into coots, but I do like the visibility the black/white contrast gives your spread from a distance.

Painted Clorox and 2 Liter Bottles. Seen them on Black Bayou in Monroe (pre-Refuge days) and also out on Wham, along with Catahoula. Any place where you need a few 100 or so on the cheap.

The visibility is what I like. The 3 on the bottom right are some I made 2 years ago. It's eye catching from a distance so I made about a dozen more.

Grew up south of Houma.

Can confirm this is true. Old timers did this as they were poor and couldn't afford decoys. At least in my pow pow's case growing up.
