I keep running into Luddites from time to time that require cash so unfortunately I still have to keep it.

Thankfully the super bowl got all the cabs with credit cards eliminating one of my few remaining needs for it.

Where do you live and what airline has the best flight selection for that city? That would be a big factor for me.

If Delta, the card you mentioned is probably a good choice. If United, Chase runs a good offer periodically of 50,000 mile signup bonus for the United Explorer card. If American, Citi is currently running a 50,000 mile bonus for that card. If Southwest, Chase has an offer now for their Southwest card with a 50,000 point sigup bonus after $2000-2500 spend in the first three months.

I would also look in to cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or American Express Gold that give you points that can be transferred to multiple airline partners. I'm partial to the Chase Sapphire preferred myself since United and Southwest are transfer partners and I live in Houston which is a United hub.

He's flying 3 times a year. It really doesn't matter.

If all he has is Delta miles, and there are hardly any Delta flights from his airport then it would matter.

I would say he's already determined that delta flies out of his airport.

The point is that if he's flying 2-3 times a year he really doesn't need to be tied to a specific airline. He needs to just collect travel points.

Given the low amount of travel, you should also consider the Barclaycard Arrival. It offers 2 points per dollar and they are redeemable towards any type of travel. The bonus is currently 40,000 points after $1,000 spend. They also give you 10% of your redeemed points back. So after spending $1,000 on the card, you would have enough points for $450 in travel.

I think what I liked more about the Delta Gold AMEX was that it included a few passive rewards like the free checked bag and priority boarding. I usually get forced to check my carry on at the gate because I board last and the overhead bins fill up. I also tend to underpack for most trips because I'm too cheap/poor to pay $50 for a checked bag.

Just keep in mind that you are limiting yourself to Delta flights. So while you can justify the $95 annual fee by checking your bags twice or doing whatever you may also be paying 100-200 more a flight.

At 3 flights a year I really do not think you should be buying an airline specific credit card. You should be thinking what is the cheapest flight for me to get from x to y.

ETA Why not just get a gold amex? Build up rewards points and use the points on ANY airline. This card also has GREAT travel rewards and benefits.

Id go with the AA super platimus master card.

1 mile per dolla spent

Plus delta always has higher flight costs VS AA and AA has many more connections flights from the BR area, MSY and BTR

Just this week I booked 3 flights to STT for next year for 75,000 miles , first class PLUS $1,100.

Saved me like $600.

Go with your local main carrier, Delta is a rip off.

Update.

I've ruled out the Delta AMEX Gold as a choice. Apparently they recently ditched the $99/yr companion credit for airline tickets. With this in mind and after crunching the numbers to estimate my rewards at my rate of spending this card simply is not a good value compared to other offerings.

I'm now leaning towards either the AMEX Blue Cash Preferred or the Capital One Venture Card. I'm a little more partial towards AMEX because I have heard great things about their customer service. I have also heard that it is easier to qualify for their elite cards if you are an existing member. That might be something I want to do in the future.

I want to thank everyone for the advice. This thread has prevented me from being persuaded into a second rate rewards card by good advertising. (I am convinced that credit card companies employ some of the best copywriters in the world).

I'm a Delta flyer and think for the most part they are a decent company but I didn't think it was the best option for you.
