Everybody is talkin about our d and how they must get better. What I see is a staff that knows our D is depleted and no longer dominant. You idiots who think you know more than Chavis....smh. Just because you were a good ball player and now coach your kids little league you don't know jack. I don't see the D improving leaps in bounds I see a team that will have to win with a great O who has less TO's than the other team. If you think Chavis has just awakens to the fact we are no longer dominant on D you are crazy. The man is working with what he has. Correct me if wrong.
PS. Not saying we can't be more disciplined but I assure you Chavis is preparing the best he can with what we have. Please tell showe evidence that argues this

Bama's Defense gives up 600 yards against A&M and then pitches a Shutout against Ole Miss so what changed from A&M to Ole Miss?

I was a firm believer that this defense would mature and come together by SEC play, but I just don't see it happening.

Maybe a couple more games and we will see improvement? But the season is damn near half over.

Not crazy, but I'm inclined to agree with CH:

It's not the first game of the season. If you are showing this much rust mid season, you can expect a magical turnaround before the end of it.

this much rust.. huh?

There were blown coverage's that allowed for two scores. Other than that the d played fairly well. Our run d is not as stout as in previous years.

It was probably never going to be an elite D with the inexperience, but can improve quite a bit with fewer blown assignments and a few freshman emerging. This week could be a good opportunity to give Beckwith and Robinson some snaps.

I think it's not only reasonable but expected that our D will improve as the season progresses.

However, OM, Bama, and A&M are gonna be challenges.

The quickest lane to improvement is getting rid of the tentativness.

The D will most definitely get better for a lot of reasons. I would like to think every player on the defense has a very competitive attitude. That being said, the players know they didn't execute on certain plays. They will watch film, be coached, and come away from it as a learning experience. Another reason I think we will see an improvement is they won't see that dynamic of an offense until we play them again in Atlanta. Yeah some will say JFF will tear us apart. But, great as he is, the kid makes a lot of stupid passes that a good D will capitalize on. They also played in one of the most hostile environments I've ever seen (which explains why sometimes they looked lost because I don't think they could get the play in). So to answer the question, I think they will improve and they're not ready to throw the towel in yet.

He could start with fundamentals. Like wrapping up when you tackle. And explain to the DBs how they're supposed to look back at the QB. And take the damn prevent defense out of the playbook!

Agreed that natural progressions will be attained. Just don't know why people act like Chavis and staff can turn them into 2011 in a few weeks. Also I agree this week is a big week to see if a fire is lit under there behind in prep/practice or if the kids themselves will except below par d. Either way I believe Chavis coaches and prepares them equally well, and there are no hocus pocus tricks where we can pull PP7, TM7, Claiborne, Minter, Mingo, even Ried out of a hat. We don't have those guys not guys with those capabilities at this time in their college career

Oh please.

I can sit down for a replay and point out obvious miscommunications/disarray for like every third play.

I know the days of the sub 20 scores are gone, but you are really going to sit there and claim that allowing 44 points was a defense that is playing "fairly well" except for two plays?

Not saying they won't improve by next year, but it's unreasonable to expect something dramatic THIS year.

D will progress as the season goes, they also will mostly come back next year, with the two deep progressing and a monster signing class, LSU will be the shite. Enjoy the shoot outs as a "change of pace" season and just go with it. No reason to hang your head low this season. You're not strapping up on Saturdays.

This is legitimate criticism of Chavis. UGA scored TD's on their last possessions of each half (as did Bama in '12). Similarly, USCe, A&M, and Clemson scored on their last possessions. Chief really, really, needs to rethink and retool how he plays these.

I know Chavis probably likes to coach from the box because he has a birds eye view of what's going on, but I would like to see him down on the field. Just from a motivation stand point. I see the defense come off the field and they're aren't enough high fives or arse chewings for that matter going on. I bet anything if the D coord. got in your face after a blown assignment you're not going to go do it again. I just think it would help light a fire under our D if he was actually on the field.

Holy shite! Are you serious?

LSU gave up 44 points and 500 yards of total offense. UGA scored on 8 of its 11 drives. They only punted twice all game. LSU had 0 sacks, and even worse, 0 QB hurries for the WHOLE game.
If that's your "fairly well" then I don't want to see what you consider bad defense.

To answer the OP, I expect that this defense will improve some going forward, but it won't even be close to some of the defenses LSU has had over the last 4 years. Hopefully they can just get to being an "average" defense, which with this offense, will likely be enough to win most of the remaining games

I was disappointed in LSU's defense Saturday, but man, it's silly for any LSU fan to jump off the ship after that game. We barely lost to a good UGA team in their stadium. Hell yeah, LSU's defense is going to improve. Will it be the 2011 defense? Maybe not. But they'll get better after this experience. I guess people forgot that that 2011 defense gave up 533 yards to West Virginia. Were people complaining about that? No, because LSU won. And that was during the 4th game of the year too so you can't blame that on rust. Give UGA and Murray some credit. They just flat out played great.

I think they will...I don't see the coaches just throwing their hands up and saying "what you see is what you get"...will we see a significant improvement? No,probably not,not enough season left for an improvement of that kind.

Yes, this defense is what it is. We've seen enough, you've seen enough, I've seen enough to know what this defense is.
