I am looking to get a new rife for hogs and deer. I am thinking of getting a 270 but not really sure what brand to get. It was also suggested to get a Leupold scope with it. I am would like to stay at or around $500-$1,000 if possible. So what are the OB thoughts?

TIA

Set aside AT LEAST $300 for a scope, rings, and a base.

Then start rifle shopping. If you spend over $350 you're getting a pretty good rifle these days.

There are a whole lot of good deals on good rifles right now.

Any flavor of remington 700 is an excellent choice. It's a classic, it's well made, and they are a very good value in the less fancy models. The fancy ones are VERY nice.

I think there are a few Winchester model 70 models in your price range as well. Another classic that you can't go wrong with.

My personal suggestion is a tikka T3 lite. IMO it is by a long ways the best value out there and rigged out will cost you around $800. You're getting a wholeeeeeeeeeeee lot of rifle for your money with a Tikka. Don't buy anything else without picking up a tikka first.

The Ruger M77 is in your price range as well. It has a spotty reputation, but despite that it's hard to find somebody who isn't happy with it.

There's a whole slough of cheap bolt actions out there as well. Savage makes a cheap one that I've yet to read anything bad about. The ruger american is supposedly very good. Mossberg 100ATR is cheap as shite and shoots well.

There's a TON of rifles in your price range. Find one you like, put a good scope on it (leupold is by far my favorite, but I'm biased) and go kill deer.

.270 is a tremendously great deer caliber. Stick with it.

My rule of thumb is that the scope should cost at least as much, but preferably more, than the rifle it is mounted on.

If you have $1000 to spend, you should buy a $400 rifle and a $600 scope for example.

Glass is more important than the rifle.

Pick out your scope then match the rifle to the scope.

A great scope can make a fair gun a tack driver.

I'm of the opinion that you should spend $200 or more on a scope, because that's how much a leupold VXI costs. I'd have no shame in putting a VXI on a $1000 rifle.

My thoughts exactly. Pretty much word for word on how I feel. Also, downshift is right as well. Don't sleep on tikka man. I will put my t3 lite up against any out there. The zeiss makes it what it is though.
To the op, a .270 is a perfect caliber for what you are looking for. Tikka, remmy's, Winchester, are all nice. I would stay with a bolt action though for sure. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

To each their own. Pretty sure the difference you notice to your eye is worth it to you, which is why you feel so strong about leupy. I have 3 leupolds that can't touch this zeiss and it's not even close. Both have their own fanboys. I believe that no 2 peoples eyes see the same. Whatever you do get, we can agree to slap it on a tikka Amirite?

Yes indeed.

Zeiss is great. There are a bunch of great scopes out there. I just like leupold because that's what I like.

And I know a guy who's house burned down and he had a leupold and zeiss in a closet. The zeiss turned into a puddle and the leupold was still a scope

So if you plan on burning your house down, leupold is clearly the better choice.

Weatherby vanguard s2 is a good gun too. Only about $550. I had one in 257 weatherby mag with a nikon scope and it was a tack driver. I think they're guaranteed 1/2" moa accuracy. Just another option to check out.

Not necessarily. Different people like different things. Leupold, zeiss, and nikon are the 3 most common ones you'll see. Out of those 3, nikon is the one that I'd definitely stay away from. I'm not sure where they get their hype from. I own one and have shot with several different ones and I've hated them all.

Zeiss and leupold are what they are. I prefer leupold because I find the eye relief to be more forgiving, and that's just what I grew up with. Unless something changes, every rifle I buy will wear a leupold.

You'll find people who say the same thing about zeiss and they aren't wrong. They're great scopes and some of the cheaper ones are a great value. The higher end ones are what they are.

One thing about scopes is that you generally get what you pay for. $200 is what I consider the minimum to get a good scope.

You should really just go to bass pro/cabelas and ask an associate on a night that isn't busy to walk you down to the exit with a 3-9-40 of a few diff brands around dusk and make your mind up on the spot. Leupold and zeiss are the best 2 "bargain" glass in this particular magnification which is great for a starter scope. Unless you intend on shooting 3-500 yards regularly, 3-9-40 is perfect.

Yep. Downshift just ended the thread. I am not familiar with Tikka, but what he said is what I've heard.

270 is a good round. 30-06 is going to be another good choice and the ole 308 has killed more deer then blue tongue.

This. Picked one up at Cabela's in Dallas last week. I was out the door for $540. Excellent rifle for the dough.
