A blue screen on my laptop.

For any computer experts, a blue screen keeps popping up on my computer and kicking me off the internet. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Start in safe mode. Install and run malware detector. Check for malware.

If that doesn't work, do a system restore to when you knew your system was working.

Answer these quick questions:

What OS?
What processor?
How much RAM?
How much free hard drive space?
How old is this computer to you?
When was the last time you backed this computer's hard drive up?

ETA: And if this is a laptop, how is it being used (ex: on a table, on a soft surface like a couch, bed, or blanket, on your lap, etc)?

re: A blue screen on my laptop.

I ran a malware detector a few days ago and also ran a hard drive scan.
The hard drive was replaced a couple of weeks ago.
I guess I will do a system restore but I can only go back a week or so

OS-xp
Pentium m705 processor
1-gb ram
only using about 6% of a 60 gb hard drive
it is fairly old-accer travelmate 4001wlci
If I can just get another month out of it I will get something else

I have never backed the hard drive up and usually either on the kitchen counter or sometimes on my comforter in bed

Consider upgrading this if nothing else works.

But also: Ever run a Check Disk (chkdsk) utility?
Another consideration is to take a flash drive and make a Live Ubuntu boot disk. Then you can treat the USB drive as the primary hard drive and the HDD will be secondary. If the problem is with something other than the HDD, you will still have failure. If the problem is the HDD itself, it should be a relatively stable system. It will get you through another month, if that's what you're looking for. Otherwise, the replacement of the HDD and RAM would likely yield much improved performance. XP Isn't exactly a 'resource hog' of an OS, but there are some very, very light linux distros out there that are designed for older hardware- it brings lots of new life out of them. Even if you are looking at a new computer, it may me worth looking into something like that for a dedicated-purpose or second computer to have around.

Overheating is a major cause of the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Check the shell out, too, and see if you can tell if it's dusty or not. If you can blow some dust out, you may have found your problem (though on a machine that old, a failing HDD is probably equally as likely)

And back it up if you have anything of value on it. ASAP.

Thank you, I am interested in increasing ram and the hard drive that was put in wasnt new. The truth is if it is working properly I have no problem keeping it for as long as it works.

Looks like you'll need pc2700 laptop RAM. I didn't search too deeply, but you'll either need to buy 1x1gb stick or 2x1gb stick, depending on what you have (because your 1gb may be 2x512 rather than 1x1024). The going rate seems to be ~$40-50 for buying the 2x1024. And about $27 for the single stick.

I'd run a chkdsk and see what the computer thinks about the quality of the disk. If it's got errors, a new HDD is pretty cheap. $50 on Tigerdirect will get you a 320GB drive (you can get a 160 for $40 or so). Searching Amazon, you could replace the 60gb with one of the same size for about $25.

Basically, so long as it's not the processor giving out, there's plenty of life left in the machine (you can upgrade the other parts easily...they 'snap' into place for the most part, the HDD may require a screw or two to hold it in place). RAM is easy to change. And then, if it just gets to be that you don't like the OS or want one that's designed to be lighter on resources, it will take some reading and some time to learn a new way of doing things. Switching OSes is easy, if you're willing to google your problems and figure out how to solve them. You can make an old laptop last for a long time, depending on your needs.

ETA: i'm probably gone for the night in a bit, but myusernameTD at google's mail is a good place to get in touch if you need help or links to some how-tos and have trouble finding them yourself.

I have since found out that the error code on the blue screen is saying that the ramsticks need to be replaced. Does anyone know where I can go locally to buy new or even used ram reasonably priced?
