"Playing speed" of the D is too slow

We are not blitzing effectively.
Why?
Our DE's and nickel and dime DB's lack the kind of speed we are used to throwing at opponents.
Our safeties are confused in coverage
Our LB's are either lost or too slow.
Our "team speed" has always been a BIG ingredient in our success, but Chief is not throwing it at the opponents, in large part because we are not elite in the overall "team speed: of our defensive players.
Combine that with youth and/or less talent, and Chief insisting to play Welter instead of Beckwith, has us where we are
We are far less than special on D..Among the many reasons, the lack of elite team speed is a big part of it.
People gave the DLine credit, and rightfully so, in 2011...but in addition to having a future all pro CB and Safety in the mix, the extreme speed of the nickel and dime backs was not given proper credit for our pressure on the opponent.
Chavis needs to put blazers on the field. RR and RJ would be worth a shot, ad of course Beckwith over Welter would be a good start.

We should run the 3-2-5 against any up-tempo team, but make Freak one of the DEs. Rasco and Allen should split time at the other.

so you want to take 1 man away from an already suspect defense?

LBs react slow. Diagnose the play slow.

Legit observation, and it's not just this year. I noticed last year the blitzer would often run right into the blocker, or else run past the QB.

people took speedsters like Ron Brooks for granted. We all knew about Claiborne, TM, etc...but blitzing someone like Micah Eugene instead of a Broooks blazer is an extreme drop off. The QB knows he has an extra couple of tenths of a second and that makes a big difference.

Another "wrinkle" I noticed LSU using yesterday was rushing 3 and then sending Dwayne Thomas in place of a DE. I'm pretty sure that will never work on a quality SEC OL.

the speed and quality talent is down without a doubt. We can only hope Chief gets other dudes on the field for the next few games before we hit the TAMU and BAMA phase of the schedule. The "pressure" is entirely inadequate.

Micah is not a TM7. Huge difference right there.

It's the worst defense in the history of LSU. Our best strategy is to just have everyone stand still on every kickoff and just let them run every one back for a TD. We give up the same points (7 points every time it's the other team's turn), but we don't waste time showing how bad our defense is.

There are no "other dudes". Recruiting 3-stars hoping they'll fool everybody works once every few years with one player, not 90% of your players. There is no talent on the defense. I know we lost 11 underclassmen last year, but there should be at least one talented player on a defense at all times. Unfortunately, there's not one player on defense at LSU that is worth a scholarship.

Good ol' Nuts!

I don't want to keep on with the Welter bashing but we are getting killed in the middle with him in there. Do we have anyone better at this point, who knows. He is either to slow to the play, taking the wrong angles or guessing wrong or completing getting destroyed by the FB or OL.
I know we are young but it has been a long time since we seen a D that was this less aggressive.

If this were true, LSU would not have been able to tackle BJ Catalon or Tre Mason and would presently have 3 losses this season.

3-2-5 Math is hard.
The sad thing is that, with these players, we could play a 12-23-18 formation and still not be able to stop my 20-years-dead grandmother from running for 300 yards. This defense is bad. It's not just bad, it's the worst that has ever worn the uniform. There is no hope for this defense. These players are worthless. The only cure is recruiting, and that will take several years.
