Quick question: I'm doing two 5 gallon batches tomorrow with the same yeast type. Only bought one pack of yeast figuring I could save by making a yeast starter. What should be my dme and water ratio and can somebody tell me the reasoning on why that much? TIA

100 grams DME to 1 liter of water. That gives you a 1.040 gravity which is perfect for a starter.

So you think that's good for putting 50% into 5 gallons of each batch?

Should I start that now? I don't have a stir plate so I'll have to shake it every now and then

I would do 2 liters and pitch 1 liter into each. I would get it going now and it will be ready by tomorrow afternoon....maybe sooner.

This is assuming you are not doing high gravity beer. 1.05 or so OG I am assuming.

I just plugged 10 gallons at 1.05 into mr malty and its telling me you need a 4 liter starter w/ intermittent shaking of the starter. I think you'll be ok with 2 liters but if you can go bigger then do so.

mr malty

Yeah I don't know about all that. Usually I will just pitch one dry packet into five gallons and it will work fine. I just wanted to up the cell count to split into two 5 gallon batches without having to buy another pack. I ended up just doing 1.5 Liters and after pitching last night they are going crazy this morning.

I usually do a 4 cups water to 1 cup DME ratio, and my starters are always bubbling up good when i'm ready to pitch. I make starters for every batch.
