Trying to learn a little bit about soccer

So my son is playing soccer for the first time this year. I played one year when I was about 5 but have since never watched nor played. So it's easy to see that I have very little knowledge of the game. Couple of basic questions:
1. When do you get to do a corner kick?
2. What has to happen for you to get a penalty kick?
I finally found out what offsides means, though I think it's a dumb rule. It should be the defenders' job to make sure you don't get behind him. But I digress.

Good luck and hope your kid has fun.
Corner kick - when the ball goes off of a defensive player and out along their endline (the line along the goal)
Penalty Kick - if you mean the kick from ten yards away from the goal, it must be a foul in the box that sorrounds the goal (up to 18 yards away from the goal).
There are other free kicks for penalties at the spot of the foul throughout the game as well.
Offsides - I've always thought of it as a strategic rule that adds to the beauty of the game - otherwise there would be a bunch of cherry picking attempts going on. Is offsides dumb in college football or the NFL?

The offsides rule is important. If not, it would be an annoying spread out game

Again, I'm not knowledgable enough to know what it would be like to not have the offsides rule, but it seems like if the offensive player got too close to the defenders, all they would have to do is run up the field and boom, an offsides penalty.

This is big. Good runs are what make the game great. My advice to you to help understand and possibly enjoy it more is to watch matches where you watch everyone instead of just the man on the ball. You'll start noticing certain things.

It's called an Offside Trap, except that the entire back line has to move up at the right time. Very basic in concept, but it isn't by any means easy.
