100 Million to Detroit from the Feds

quote:

DETROIT (AP) -- The U.S. government directed more than $100 million in grants Thursday to help bankrupt Detroit tear down vacant buildings and spur job growth, but the help falls far short of the wider bailout some city leaders had sought.

I'm shocked that 100 million wasn't enough for them. Shocked.

Reminds me of the postal service. Those guys can't get their shite in order, so let's bump up the stamp prices again.

Not a good analogy.. The postal service would be fine if the federal government wasn't insisting on some asinine rules that help feed their coffers with extra money while they shove over an IOU

Congress makes them fully fund their pensions and benefits... Aren't pensions the main problem for Detroit's financial woes

Not a perfectly clean analogy but I know what you're getting at.

Make them fund them out something like 75 years.. An unheard of amt.. They simply want the money.

Right. Does it matter that it was a natural disaster vs bad management and government policy?

Screw that...send them 100 million cigarettes - that would be much less wasteful, and probably make them happier in the long run.

Absolutely a differentgam to compare the two together. Detroit has made the choice to lie doe down with dogs and now has flea bites. NOLA had crappy assed federally built levees that failed with the first test given to them.

re: 100 Million to Detroit from the Feds

The White House can "scrounge around" in the (what budget) budget and find 100 million in untapped funds, but cuts can't possibly be made anywhere?

Oh, wait ... politics as usual

quote:

The Obama administration is trying to show its support without trying to send any message about a bailout, said Peter Henning, a Wayne State Law School professor.

Officials, especially those from HUD and Transportation, can commit funds for infrastructure projects, while Holder can chip in resources for fight Detroit's high violent crime rate, Henning said.

"So these are back door ways to provide federal funding and support without having to seek a bailout, which would be dead on arrival from both parties

This 100 million is probably a slush fund to the bureaucrats and fat cats in Detroit that will be used for luxury expenses.

It may not be their fault. We have a huge problem with pensions in Trenton for Police and Fire departments. The problem is with state law that mandates arbitration based on neighboring towns. The little suburbs who have 20 officers in the force drive up salaries and the cities (with much larger forces) are forced by an arbitrator to basically match. The same goes for teachers.

Almost our entire collection of taxes goes towards police officers on duty and an equal amount to retired officer pensions.
