Omi's Chinese menu. Do it.

After seeing the hype here, I'm ashamed to say I've never eaten there. I'm putting this on my list of things to try solely based off of this discussion thread.

Also, we didn't do any Chinese/Japanese restaurants this season, so this could be a good fit. Is it locally owned (not a chain)?

Locally owned. The owner/chef combo originally started Koi. Very nice folks. Even better food.

I suspect they offer sushi to hedge bets and appeal to the BR masses. Never had it, can't vouch for it. Chinese is where it's at though. Sichuan cuisine vs the standard fast-food prepackaged crap. I officially can't eat any other Chinese in the city. It ruined me with its superiority.

Yeah, it's odd their store front is described as Japanese Restaurant / Sushi, but everyone here raves about the Chinese menu.

Color me intrigued.

If the goal is to enlighten people to good, hidden places around BR, then three come to mind:

Pinetta's. I graduated in 2008, and took more than two dozen people to that place while I was in BR, and every single person told me they had driven by it but never heard of it, which is a shame. Food takes awhile, but it is definitely worth it.

Nino's. IMO, best Italian in BR. Beats Ruffino's. IMO

Roberto's. While not in BR, the drive from campus on River Road is a must for any student. Great, great, great food.

How do people not know about Pinette's, Nino's, or Roberto's? Sure, they're not as well known as some others, but these are Baton Rouge area staples...are they not?

Some of the others mentioned in here, especially the mexican restaurants, I have never even heard of or seen.

went to la Reyna today. Have to say I was disappointed with what I got (paella) relative to expectations. It was decently tasty but by no means close to the best I've had. Hell, I've made better before. Ingredients were pretty low quality, imo. (tiny ramen shrimp). It was cheap though and every other dish I saw people eating looked positively fantastic, so I'll check it out soon, just wont go for the paella.

I'm not crazy about their paella. Very good mole, Honduran enchiladas, sweet fried plantains, among others.

Honestly, I guess the owner thought that would attract the crowd. But it's not. That location has been doomed for the longest time, and there have already been shitty sushi/hibachi places there.

I think they would have done better advertising themselves as authentic Sichuan Chinese food.

The first time I went there, they didn't even hand me a Chinese menu. Jones and I had to ask for it.

They gave it to me automatically my next time there, but I was with my Chinese friend, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.. or if enough people came in asking for the Chinese menu.

I went a few weeks ago for the first time solely on the recommendation of this board. There were mostly asian people there and no hostess to be seen. We stood around feeling out of place but then we were seated and given both menus. Our server was wonderful even if her English speaking left something to be desired. The friends we went with returned the next weekend.

I have never had the paella at La Reyna actually. My friend liked it and I knew the price was good for the dish. I had a plantain and fish dish that I really liked but I have no idea what the name was. Another friend had a slow cooked pork dish that was incredible.

Yeah, give them another try for sure. I've never had the paella there. Go for the Puerco Guisado or Pollo con Papas.

This is actually a great idea! Would make for a great video.

For reference, our current lineup this season includes:

Mason's Grill ( LINK)
Magpie Cafe ( LINK)
Juban's ( LINK)
Tin Roof (10/3 Release)
Fresh Food Truck (10/10 Release)
IPO (10/17)
Anthony's (10/24)
Doe's (10/31, but no food just their bar)

Obviously, these aren't all hidden gems, but I wanted to make sure we have a good mix of gems in Season 2.

Woefully underutilized, compared to what Chicago's used to do with it

Yeah, I had never considered Doe's for anything other than steak until we shot this series.

Very solid option that not enough people use.

Doe's fault, for not going all in on it, or letting people know the bar is even there. They need an entrance facing Gov't street as well

Maybe your story will shed some light on it, as well as have them up their game

It came out really well, also opened my eyes.

It's tough to get the word out in this market I suppose, but I've also never tried to run a restaurant.

Hope so, I live nearby, and would love to walk there, but when I last went to bar a year ago or so, there wasn't much at bar to attract me back. Food prices kind of keep it out of rotation of being a regular place to eat as well.

Its an odd concept, as a casual high-end steakhouse. Usually when people shell out money like that for steak, they prefer a nicer environment. I think it appeals more towards Mississippi and Arkansas people.

I think maybe adding some blues musicians on some nights in bar may be a cool idea that fits in with their identity and neighborhood.

I suppose I will meander over there again soon for happy hour and see what has changed

I have no desire to go to Doe's and if any of you know Jones' hatred for it on here, I doubt I'll ever be faced with that option anyway.

I agree with you. If I'm eating a rather pricy dinner, I want to dress up and there be a nice atmosphere.. Not a picnic table and checkered tablecloth.
