Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports with the boom:

quote:

In 1950 Bud Wilkinson earned $15,000 to coach Oklahoma football. The Sooners played at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, with most of its 56,000 seats available for less than $5. Players were given scholarships.

In 1971 Barry Switzer earned $35,000 to coach the Sooners. Oklahoma Memorial had grown to 62,000. Players were given scholarships.

In 1988 Switzer was bought out. He was making $88,000. The stadium seated 75,000. Players were given scholarships.

This year Bob Stoops will earn $4.55 million to coach in a stadium that has undergone $125 million in renovations in 1998 and now seats 82,112. Tickets are available online for Oklahoma's next home game, against TCU on Oct. 5. Two seats near the 40-yard line, about 30 rows up, are available for $650 on Stubhub.com.

Players are given scholarships.

See where I'm going with this?

Does he give the approximate value of the scholarships throughout the years? If not, the article is pointless

Exactly, the players are getting paid. Free education is worth a lot to most people.

What's the value of a scholarship? Yeah...you get to go to college for free but a BA isn't worth what it was in the 70s or 80s. Unless you get a degree in a good field you aren't going to see any return from that diploma. And let's face it, the vast majority of college football players aren't smart enough to get a degree in chemical engineering.

It was a good deal 20 years ago. But not so much anymore.

The value of a scholarship is what it would have cost otherwise to obtain that education. Whether a football player capitalizes on that is another thing.

Whose fault is that?

Repackaging the "coaches make more money and tickets are expensive" argument is a boom?

Well then I suggest they take advantage and get a degree in a good field. If they don't think it is worth the free education, then they should skip college and train for 3 years after high school. If they don't like waiting 3 years, take that up with the NFL, not the NCAA.

along with free clothes, free shoes, free travel, free food, medical coverage, etc... they act like they get nothing and that couldn't be farther from the truth.

I am all for paying players... just not within the ncaa format. If players want to make money in the time between HS and the NFL then someone needs to convince the NFL to create a minor leagues.

Paying players at the ncaa level is just one of the dumbest ideas in the world.

And hundreds, maybe thousands of people, make millions more off of their play on the field every single year.

Not a terrible idea. But 90% of CFB players will never see an NFL contract. The bulk of the players go get a free education and move on with life after football.

The minor league would be pretty small and honestly most of the players would be getting such a small amount they'd rather go get a free education.

You're assuming that all college athletes are good enough to play in the NFL.
