What's everyone planting this year for food plots? Our soil is neutral PH, looking for some ideas.

We have a mix of oats, wheat, white/durana clover, and brassicas on some fields. Others have soybeans and cow peas. Others have white and red clover only.

They usually don't touch it until the we get several nights below freezing. The starches in the big leaves turns to glucose, and then they hit it pretty hard. We usually don't get alot of real cold weather, and thats one reason they don't prefer the brassicas/rape over oats and clover.

However, we used some dwarf brassicas last year (much smaller leaves and plants) and they HAMMERED THEM. We didn't plant them until December and they hit them hard until March.

I have a buddy of mine who did his food plots with bird seed. Yes, I said bird seed. He went to tractor supply & bought a big sack of wild bird seed, disced up the ground @ his lease & spread out the bird seed. I have never heard of this before but he told me to look at what kinds of seeds are in bird seed & I'd be suprised. Never checked up on it though. FWIW he killed 5 deer out of that food plot last year in beauregard parish...

Man I would love more info on this, would cut cost a lot.

Someone on tractor supply has figured it out also,

$13 for a 35# bag

great food plot material
For early season and late season plots designed for forage not antler growth this bird seed can't be beat. Very little ground work needs to be done and it grows in drought areas with only the dew for moisture. We planted around two tenths of an acre and have gotten a lot of action from deer and hogs. Its a great alternative to expensive seeds that require a more in-depth planting method and must have x amount of water or it dies. Antler growth at this time of year (middle August) is not going to change by feeding them what antler growth needs so this bird seed fills the ticket for attraction to forage. It grows well into the cooler months and have even seen it sweat out a few frosts.

? Yes, I recommend this product.

His food plot looked like a jungle but the deer tore that shite up for real. I would have never thought in a million years that it would have worked but he swears by it. Not sure if there are different types of bird seed, but i know he got a big arse sack from tractor supply & it just said "wild bird seed" on it. Prolly the same shite they sell @ walmart or home depot...

Yeah I remember that his uncle was out there slaving over some food plots on his section of the lease bragging to us about how he spent tons of money on all this special high dollar seed & what not. He killed 2 deer last year. Yearling doe & a spike.

My buddy had about $50 tied up in his food plot & he couldn't keep the deer out of it.

I planted Buck Busters blend. A mix that a biologist in Vidalia blended. $38 for 50 lbs at most co-ops / feed stores in the area. Covers 1 acre, and 100-200 lbs of fertilizer recommended at planting. Contains wheat, oats, Elbon Rye, Arvika Winterpeas, three species of Brassica (Rape), and Dixie Crimson Clover.

We aren't planting oats this year in an attempt to keep the hogs out. They love to catch a plot right after you plant oats.

We are planting wheat, jumbo ladino clover, rape, turnips, sugar beets and sainfoin. First year to try the sainfoin but have had people recommend it.

Ordered from these guys this year: Welter Seed click on wildlife perfect seed at the bottom for their mixes.

Don't really have much luck with peas. They grow nicely until the first frost and then they are done.

I think it's mostly milo in birdseed, with sunflower, cracked corn, and wheat.

I'd imagine the deer were mostly eating the wheat and milo.
