What makes this different than regular gumbo and what does the Ya ya mean?

Looks like I found the answer
So essentially...my mom's side of the family

Gumbo is the African name for "okra". Ya Ya is African name for rice. Hence, Gumbo Ya Ya.

So I guess you didn't know that jambalaya is jambon et ya ya = pork and rice

Good book. The chapter about the Irish Channel is interesting for sure.

Hence true gumbo must have okra. I will go to my grave fighting the non-okra gumbo makers.

Count me as a non okra gumbo maker. My peeps arrived in LA in 1764 on one of the "Seven Ships", so my Cajun foodie-ness is bona fide and not learned out of a cookbook or from a PBS show.

No okra or tomatoes in my gumbo. I don't care from where it originated. It originated in Acadiana for me and those two ingredients were never in it. If you like it in gumbo, eat it. Okra overpowers other flavors I prefer.

Okra doesn't belong in a gumbo, do you add tomatoes in your gumbo too?

Nonsense
I can see it not being a preference but to flat out say it doesn't belong is just silly

See, I have also tasted okra strongly in some people's gumbo, but I think that's just their lack of gumbo making skill because we have okra in the gumbo at work (my work is known for their gumbo) and I can't taste it at all.

So if I was going to put okra in my gumbo, when would I put it in and how much? Probably using frozen okra
