Anybody have any specifics on what to typically expect from a manager? Isn't it a flat fee plus a % above a hurdle return or something of that nature?

If it's a fee based account, most advisors will charge 1-1.5%. Most don't charge flat fees, with the exception of an IRA fee($40). Usually you'll get a discount at $1.5-2M. ;-)

most firms have fee schedules that are tiered.

for example::

1.5% for 1st $250k
1.2% for next $250-$500k
1.1% for next $500-$750k
0.85% for next 1MM to 1.25
