Our linebacker play.

Not to belabor the point, but I will. If our linebacker play doesn't improve we are going to lose games to great offenses going forward. People look at the stats on Saturday and say Barrow and Welter had great games because of the # of tackles they made. But what they are not looking at is the biggest stat of the night, Auburn averaged 4.1 yds per carry that is with N Marshall's stats in the mix. If you just look at the RB's yds that Mason & Payne averaged 5.3yds per carry, that is a huge issue. Personally I think Mason & Payne are are better backs than people give them credit for, but either way 5.3yds per carry is an ISSUE.
Here are the best comments I have read since the game Saturday that sum up our linebacker play;
"At linebacker, the 32 tackles that D.J. Welter, Lamin Barrow and Kwon Alexander combined for really didn't show how poorly they played. Barrow and Welter are simply too passive at times. They know where to be and they find their gap, but instead of exploding into it and running to the ball they often times just wait for the runner to come to them and catch him. Alexander is the far more active and explosive player, but you can tell that he's still not diagnosing what he sees in front of him that well."
Whether the posi-tigers want to recognize this or not, if our linebacker play "in particular our Mike position" doesn't improve drastically this week in Athens it is going to be a long night for us. It is tough to go on the road in the SEC and win, but it is even tougher when they are a top 10 team and playing in a hostile environment like Athens.

I agree entirely. The LB's seem slow and tentative. The key question is why our linebackers are struggling so mightily? Is it a lack of experience, a lack of proper coaching, or do we simply have a talent deficiency?

Stop being needlessly defensive and reactionary. I was merely listing that prospect it order to be exhaustive. Logically, there are only three general reasons our LB play could be inadequate over the course of several games: poor coaching, inexperience/youth, or a lack of talent. (One could argue that poor player development, poor scheme, or poor execution are separate rationales, but I believe those would ultimately be subsumed within the three enumerated categories.)

Chablis has always valued speed over size. The MLB for us needs to be both and be able to get us in the right position.They ain't one on the roster this year that can do all three. DJ must be as close it it gets.......

Keep in mind the type of offense Auburn runs and the way we defended it. I agree the LB spot has been a weakness but scheme makes it seem worse going forward than it really is.
Our Offense is clicking and along with the big leads this has allowed LSU to play a Vanilla defense further into the season than probably ever before in LSU history.
Look for Chavis to dial up some run stuffing plays on defense when they play Ga.!

Bottom line is that our entire defense just isn't going to carry us this year like they have in the past. If we go far this year, it will be because of our offense.
D is just OK this year. D-line, Linebackers, Corners and Safeties. No defensive unit is getting me excited. However, the Offense is getting me excited and can carry us, if the defense can prevent the big plays.

This is a good point that many overlook. Having a lot of tackles, especially when most of them are assists and not solo tackles, don't mean you played well. It often means you helped clean up on a play.
Again, didn't Barrow and Welter have like 2 solo tackles combined? That means that 18 of their 20 tackles were assisted (or 90%). Compare that to Alexander who had 5 solo tackles and 5 assisted tackles.
Fact is Barrow and Welter just aren't that good.
Think about this. Minter and Barrow, our senior starting LBers have combined 9 solo tackles in 4 games. NINE!

Georgia is a very losable game depending on how our linebackers play. Hope Chavis is addressing it right now.

so while the negaturds have bashed Miles and say he only has a job because of chavis, its his unit thst is the worst on the team.

Kwon has been awesome and may be our best player on defense. Welter and Barrow not so much but Barrow has proven himself over the years to be fairly solid. What the younger guys lack in technique and knowledge they would more than make up for with greater speed and possibly size, instincts, and tenacity (would be hard to have less of it). Go with Beckwith and either Debo, Riley, Philips, Louis, or Lewis Neal or move Logan Stokes or Melvin Jones to LB. Take your lumps on the learning curve but they will more than make up for it in the long run just on shear athleticism in the mean time. Somewhere on this roster there are better LB's. That is where an eye for talent comes in and one of the reasons these coaches earn the big bucks. Time for them to step out the box and earn their money.

I love Chavis, but 6 solo tackles by Welter in 4 games isn't good enough. I suspect Chavis and Miles know this. That's why the previous talk about Beckwith playing more.

Maybe it is time to go with a 5-1-5 defensive alignment. Freak, Ferguson, and LoCoutore at DT's; Rasco and Allen at DE; Kwon at LB; Mills, Tre White, Martin, Loston, and Eugene in the secondary (also get Jefferson in there if Eugene isn't cutting it).

talk is one thing, Beckwith didn't play any MLB last week. We are stuck with Welter riding 180 lb RBs like ponies for 9 yard gains and reading on here how great he was for piling up assists.
