As we’ve been working on bringing Steam to the living room, we’ve come to the conclusion that the environment best suited to delivering value to customers is an operating system built around Steam itself. SteamOS combines the rock-solid architecture of Linux with a gaming experience built for the big screen. It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines.

In-home Streaming

You can play all your Windows and Mac games on your SteamOS machine, too. Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have - then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV!

Music, TV, Movies

We’re working with many of the media services you know and love. Soon we will begin bringing them online, allowing you to access your favorite music and video with Steam and SteamOS.

I'm not sure I am understanding this concept completely.

What does this accomplish that hooking your pc into a tv already doesn't?

Essentially they want you to be able to build a htpc and not even need to buy an OS for it. There is a long term plan too I think. They have been pushing games for linux so i bet they are hoping to get everyone gaming on their OS before it's all over.

>buy an OS

no but I get it at least, cheaper than paying for windows when literally all you want to do is play vidya. not a terrible idea, I reckon, but still not sure I see the marketability; the people who just want to play vidya buy consoles. I'll reserve judgment in either direction until more info comes out

Gabe has been very critical of Windows 8 and Mac gaming isn't going to happen.

Option #3.

My friend is really hyped up about these announcements.

"Man if this is the first one then the next two must be huge....and you KNOW there is some symbolism with the 3rd one. YOU KNOW what it is going to be!!!!"

As long as they can come up with something as smooth as Windows Media Center, I'm all over it.

Apparently in the coming months valve plans to announce AAA titles coming in 2014 that will run in their OS. They really are trying to become the pc gaming platform.

I'm calling it right here. Half-life 3, Left 4 Dead 3, Portal 3, and Team Fortress 3 all coming in 2014 & 2015 exclusively to SteamOS!

Let the ignorance flow through you.

I'm pretty pumped about this. Especially the streaming games to other PCs aspect

So would I be playing the games through the computer or through the television? Also, would I still be able to use a mouse and keyboard?
