Or buy one, how often am I expected to upgrade? That's what I love about consoles, no upgrading to play games.

Two years on this PC and haven't upgraded a thing, still running games at ultra. Upgrading is blown out of proportions, you can run a machine for 3-5 years with little problems and no upgrades if you build it right the first time, but it is addictive and you will want to upgrade, but you don't have to.

But when it comes time to upgrade you don't have to put up with shitty graphics or performance waiting for the next console.

What he said, it is all about what you want. You can build once and leave it for 8 years like consoles do

Ummm... no you can not. 3yrs is doable. 5 yrs is stretching it for gaming. 8 years and you are running a Pentium 4. You might be able to run Diablo 3 and Torchlight at 1024x768 and that is about it. You sure in the hell aren't playing Crysis, Bioshock, Battlefield, COD, or any modern MMO

So that console magically upgrades itself during those 8 years?

I haven't touched my computer since I got it 2 years ago.

I'll probably get a new video card next year.

You simply can not compare a console to a PC as far as upgrades.

Console developers know they only have to develop for that exact hardware.

PC developers aren't worried about making sure their game can run on 8 year old hardware. Most of them are likely targeting a 3 to 5 yr window.

Not everything would have to be upgraded though. sometimes it is as easy as the video card and everything else is fine.

a lot depends on if you are still using a 1080p monitor or not.
fairly cheap cards will max out everything but crysis 3 @ 1080p. Hell you could get a HD7950 for under $200 a couple of weeks ago.
