Seeing the Pinot topic here and it got me thinking, would anyone be interested in a wine tasting group in the BR area? Set a price cap on what we bring, try different wines you might've never had before or would've thought of buying. Not sure how to get this rolling but I need to "study" more for my next sommelier exam and there are not enough opportunities for this here as there are in larger cities. Maybe we could do a correspondence on a specific varietal (like Pinot, Merlot, Cab, Summer Whites, Chardonnay), do a couple brown bag blind tastings. Maybe I could educate others while educating myself? Just need to get out of this rut and it would be awesome to be able to taste multiple wines for an reasonable price point. Let me know if you're interested, could be fun and open up your minds to other options of the world!

Not at all. I was thinking I have enough connections with people in the city to use a room at a retailer like Churchills or a private room at a restaurant on a slower night like Monday or Tuesday. Limit it to 10-12 people or so and see what happens. I've attempted it with people form the Guild of Sommeliers but there are not enough of us in Baton Rouge. Quite a few in NOLA. I live in Plaquemine anyways. Im sure I could get a smaller room at Jubans, Mansurs, Ginos, etc often enough to make it worth the while. Drink some good stuff and have a decent meal...

Phuck wine......

But really whatever floats your boat. Do ya thing girl...start up some wine tasting events.

No really, there are plenty of women that watch football while drinking wine.

Seriously, go for it man....I was just messing around. I drink wine sometimes...I just don't talk about it in public.

Really I do...just messing around....sounds like a great idea.

I drink beer and scotch at home, but I am a Certified Sommelier taking my CSW exam in a few weeks and trying to apply for my Advanced Sommelier exam within the next year or so hopefully. I really either need a group to socialize and practice with (tasting multiple wines trying to connect the dots on all of the regions I study about on a regular basis) or to get out of town and find somewhere I can apply my talents on a larger scale for a little while. This is cheaper than flying to each of these countries while at least getting to experience some of the things the region has to offer.

Our beer tasting group will kick y'all arse.

Keep crushing on the grape. We've got a complex array of flavors at our fingertips.

I was really just joking around brah.

I could/would be part of a beer drinking club, wine drinking club, whiskey drinking club...etc. if my liver, family, job...etc could handle it

This sounds a little rapey...

J/k...or not...honestly I didn't read all of it because long paragraphs and big tits are my kryptonite after I've had a few drinks...or maybe they're always my kryptonite?

We used to have a good one in BR. Several folks would split each month and host.... Pay a small fee for the "club" as organizational due for deposits on rooms, incidentals, etc. It fizzled due to the same folks having to do all the work. Was good to allow members to decide if they wanted to do a tasting, a dinner, etc..... When I say "members" - was open to the public. Anyone could attend, and could "join"

Call Elsa at Bocage Raquet Club. They have a good wine program. About once a month they bring someone in for a tasting and have a menu planned around it. The people brought in varies from really good to mediocre but it's a good group. Most are enthusiasts like me who enjoy and want to learn more. Some are there just for the wine but that's ok too because it's what it's all about. I've been to a few when I get time and really learn more from the group which I think is better than say a distributor picked representative. I don't think you have to be a member for the wine club however fwiw it's a very reasonably priced club. They have nice wine lockers and you can buy through them if you want.

The good thing is they organize it and all you have to do is show up. If you don't like what they are tasting don't make that one. But the better thing is they are very good at listening to what you want and trying to accommodate. Plus you can meet some very good tasters that you might develop correspondence with outside the group.

It's as good a place to start as any. You wouldn't need to organize just show up and participate then when you feel comfortable make your suggestions regarding vintage, varietals, regions ect...

Shaggy, cramming for the CSW exam doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Just remember wine before liquor, never been sicker........

I've been studying a few months. This test isn't nearly as bad as the advanced somm will be. Brew watch the movie SOMM if you want to appreciate the hell the master sommeliers put themselves through before the exam. Great film.

I think BR desperately needs an organized wine tasting group. I am the General Manager of a locally owned restaurant, and I am currently working to offer monthly wine tastings here at the restaurant. We have a private room that can accommodate large groups, plus we have the access to purchase wine from the many wine vendors across the state. Perhaps we could combine our efforts to create a monthly wine tasting. Let me know your thoughts on this idea.
