I was wondering how we were perceived before the 2000's? I didn't really care about a whole lot in my hs and middle school days.. And was wondering what the country thought of us? I know we've pulled off some sporadic big wins over the years. Were we considered to be talented, but lacking the right coach?

It was about like people view Georgia right now. People that knew football recognized LSUs potential. They also recognized that, for whatever reason, LSU had not realized that potential because of poor management from the President to the AD to the coaching staffs.

As an aside, if UGA ever finds their Saban, they will go on a run the likes of which has never been seen due to population and the shear numbers of athletes in state.

I would compare it to a modern day Arizona St, or Baylor.

Good, but not great. Capable of pulling the upset, but not a major threat for the national picture.

In the 90's, we were about like Iowa is today

GA high school football is a big deal, but LA will still give them all they can handle.

But we didn't have their coach, who has been so highly thought of.. But hasn't done shite. I've never understood the infatuation with Kirk Ferentz..

This. Anytime we were ranked, it was a GREAT year. Never really a top 10 team, but were always a team that could pull an upset.

Never got the top players in the state, minus Kevin Faulk. Talent was always here, but rarely came here. We werent an established program like we are today.

One phrase: sleeping giant. We were regarded as chronic underchievers who squandered a passionate fan base and fertile recruiting region through inept, parochial administration and ill-advised coaching hires.

For the most part LSU was viewed as pretenders.

we weren't considered bad in the late 90s. we had a bad D in 98, and some bad luck with injuries in 99, but I don't think we'd sunk to Tulane levels. Saban didn't have to rebuild the way DiNardo did.

Coach killer. Good program with the occasional really good year. TAMU level would be a good comparison IMO.

Say what you want. Not like UGA, not like Tulane, not like Clemson. If anyone at all, we were what A&M has been the past few years. Everyone knew the potential, but getting people to buy into the system was what we needed. Had Bo Rein not died, we would have been the Nebraska and Miami of the 1980's.
