Most important image taken by Hubble

Five minute video

quote:

In 1996, scientists took a huge risk when they pointed the Hubble telescope to an inky field that they believed to be void of stars and planets. As images from Hubble are in constant demand, the worry was that devoting so much time to a black space would prove futile. Once the photons finally registered, though, that leap of faith proved fruitful: light from over three thousand galaxies illuminated the image. A few years and missions later, Hubble’s glimpse into what is known as the deep field has revealed that we are just one tiny part of a vast system comprising 100 billion galaxies.

It is amazing to even attempt to ponder the size of space, but give it a try.

I once watched a show about supermassive black holes, and it discussed how they find them by monitoring the movements of stars in certain areas. They found that one star was orbiting around something (turned out to be a black hole) at 19million miles per hour. Something that large moving that fast is beyond our comprehension.

very cool - It's crazy to think how small our part is

Just when we thought we had it all figured out.

Sorta like jared lorenzen?

And I am in love with the unknown of space. I really can't comprehend the vastness of it

This really shows just how large the universe is and how small we are.

And just think, all that stuff is just in what is "observable" to us. The "unobservable" part ranges anywhere from much larger to infinite.

Greta stuff although I don't agree with the writers contention that it was such a "big risk". If nothing were there we still would have learned that that space was vacant.

No wonder Jesus hasn't made it back yet he had to go to all of those other places and get nailed to the cross. I bet he gets tires of that shite.

This is absolutely nuts and really pissed me off when people think we should allocate resources to something besides space, like for instance bombing brown people.

I agree. If a whole section of space was empty stretching back billions of light years, that seems like it would be even more noteworthy than the fact that there were a few million extra galaxies chilling out back there.

My high school science professor had this image in his classroom. I was always fascinated by it. Just the thought that every single light on that image was a galaxy is enough to make your head spin
