The new sign is smaller, with a purple background. IMO, it looks like an afterthought, not a statement made to strike fear in visitors.

This. Too small. I didn't even see it until somebody pointed it out.

That was the original moniker. Somehow morphed into Death Valley sometime (I guess) in the 70's or so.

I think the confusion is that dan borne replaced its saturday night in death valley with saturday night in tiger stadium for the 2005 season. Said he justdidn't feel comfortable saying death valley when katrina victims had died right next door in the pmac and field house.

This. "Death Valley" is overplayed (other stadiums have the name) and geographically erroneous (we are in LA not L.A.).

Deaf Valley is original and more to the point. When we want to be Tiger Stadium is deafening

they had removed this sign and replaced it with, of all things, advertising
I hate to see advertising in TS. I know it is the norm across collegiate and professional athletics, but I still detest it. It takes away from the atmosphere of an incredible structure.

the windows to the press box in this pic is covered up for some reason. The windows you see right above the WTDV sign were used by in house production / dan borne, etc. The actual press box from those days was on the level directly above. It wasn't amazing or anything but it wasn't that bad.

I worked for LSU during the 98 season doing intern type stuff while i was in high school. One game I talked to a guy up in the press box that worked for the NFL and was there scouting referees. He was a cool guy.

Thanks Tigerfan84 for posting the bandits pic. It brings back memories. There was a posed version that made the cover of Look (or Life) Magazine in 1959.
