Building a fishing pond

Anybody ever had one built and is able to fish in it? I want one but I don't know if they are worth the cost or time.

How big of a piece of property do you have to build on?

None, it's just something I want to do in the future. I would like to find property with a fishing spot but if not I want to build one

Well good. The bigger the better, but I've seen ponds as small as a twin size bed before...

Best advice you'll get here.

Do your research, dig it deep, do it right.

i've built two and still have one. make us of the terrain to keep cost down. usda-nrcs can come help you pick a site on your property for free, up to you and/or your wallet to build it.
they are really cool to have. go as big as you can afford and fit because the smaller ones are much more delicate to manage: algae blooms, low D.O., over/under harvest, etc.

AS stated, research and do it right. I have a 1 &1/3 ac pond behind my home. It is great to have and fish. It does require upkeep, expense, and management. I have no regrets at all. After a bitchy day at the office, I can sit on my pier, drink a beer(hey it rhymes), and fish if I want. My bass are plentiful, catfish are big, and bream are always ready. My Lab loves to swim in it, and my ducks are happy.

Mine will be about an acre, possibly more, when I build.

Around here some farmers dig ponds for people.

9000 series 8 wheel and a 18yard bucket or two.

I'd say you're looking at somewhere in the 4 figures to dig a good sized ponds.

But I couldn't tell you more than that.

Back before "Dear Leader" was elected, things were popping economically here in North Florida.

Contractors were always needing fill dirt and many of my friends were trading fill dirt for ponds.

Might be an avenue to look into.

Yea lots of people would dig ponds and use dirt for their own pads.

Only had to pay for labor and such.

re: Building a fishing pond

I made a deal with a dirt contractor to use some to build up my homesite (about 18000 yds). He took rest and we mitageted his bill to run my water lines (about 600ft), install culverts along entire road, housepad, driveway etc. All told I reduced his bill from 50k to 18 k.
